New Tom Waits

Posted by: Diccus62 on 10 September 2006

Must admit this one slipped me by but then again its not out until the end of November. I guess its a good time to release a Tom record. The summer and Tom Waits just don't go together Winker

Anyway this from the Observer today..........

Tom Waits
Orphans
Anti, Nov 20

A triple CD set featuring 54 songs from Waits's vaults including 30 that have never been heard before, Orphans covers everything from rockabilly stomps to broken-down ballads, subterranean rumbas to mutated cover versions. Grouped generically by CD, the album comprises Brawlers, a collection of full-throated blues-based rockers; Bawlers , a jumble of seasick ballads, off-kilter waltzes and woozy love songs; and Bastards, a blend of avant-garde instrumentals and spoken-word interludes. Threaded through each album are the various songs and sound pieces that Waits has recorded for films, stage plays and other odd projects, such as Hal Willner's album of Disney covers. 'Heigh Ho', a song made famous by seven Disney dwarves, is a highlight, grotesque and scary, while his nightmarish 'Poor Little Lamb' should not be played in the presence of nervous children. Or adults for that matter.
S'OH

He says: 'Orphans are rough and tender tunes. They grew up hard ... They don't bite, they just need attention.'

Buy this if you liked: Tom Waits's last album, Real Gone.

Really good album - a bit of a shock to those used to Waits singing his songs but Hammond brings the Blues to the songs. His growling voice sounds fantastic against Waits production. "Murder In The Red Barn", "Jockey Full Of Bourbon" and "16 Shells From A Thirty Ought Six" are particular favourites.

Skip have you come across

Holly Cole - Temptation a kind of lazy, jazzy take on Waits songs. Once it sinks in what she is doing this is a good one as well - a Sunday morning kind of album:
* 1. Take Me Home
* 2. Train Song
* 3. Jersey Girl
* 4. Temptation
* 5. Falling Down
* 6. Invitation To The Blues
* 7. Cinny's Waltz
* 8. Frank's Theme
* 9. Little Boy
* 10. I Don't Wanna Grow Up
* 11. Tango Til They're Sore
* 12. (Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night
* 13. Soldiers Things
* 14. I Want You
* 15. Good Old World
* 16. The Briar And The Rose
* 17. Shiver Me Timbers

I have the Holly Cole Temptation. I want to like Holly Cole, and have much of her stuff, and I know her heart is in the right place, but something about her delivery usually wears me out before the CD is over. I prefer the original Waits' version of every song on Temptation, and I think I have heard him do all but a couple of them. And I think I prefer Hammonds' version of every song on Wicked Grin.

Have you heard "One From the Heart"? It is more the Asylum sound, from the early 80's movie from Zoetrope Studios, before Waits into that current junkyard sound of his. Very cool soundtrack with Crystal Gale. Great on vinyl (33 only on this one) , ok on CD. Worth having.

I tend to agree with your comments on Holly Cole. It is an album I always pull before the end (although I listened to it yesterday all the way through). It strikes me as great "dinner party music".

One From The Heart - I saw the film, indeed I think I've got it somewhere. Anyone in the UK interested in this it is here

I have not paid much attention to Rod Stewart since the Wake Up Maggie days. Doubt I will either, Tom Waits or not.

Anybody heard this "unauthorized" compilation? Looks interesting. How does it sound? I am trying to decide whether to keep it or give it away unopened.
