VW Golf V 1.9TDI 66KW

Hi!
I'm in the process of selecting a new lease car. I have test driven a Golf V 1.6FSI and I really like the car, but the engine is too slow and noisy in my experience. Compared to my present Peugeot 307 1.6 it's not a step forward in these aspects. But I quite like the Golf. Does anyone have any experience with the new 1.9 TDI 66KW engine? Would it perform better than the 1.6FSI? Or is it a no-brainer to go to the 77KW-version? This is quite a bit more expensive and frankly I do have better destinations for my money. But I do also need a comfortable car. Aarrgghh, those awful taxes!
Regards, Bas

I also thought the A3 would have a higer residual value, but the leasecompany does seem to think somewhat different. The Audi and the VW I have had calculated only differ 1000 euro in new price, but the VW is waaaaaaay cheaper in leasing!
Probably means the leasing company is getting a deeper discount from VW than from Audi.

Hi Bas,
I ordered the Symphony sound system for my car which is an optional extra. It provides an AM/FM radio, cassette unit and 6 CD autochanger. The reason I specified this unit is because I wanted the facility to have a CD autochanger and the CDs are loaded into the slot on the dashboard instead of a separate glove box mounted magazine. My car is the "Sport" specification and comes as standard with a single play CD player. When I ordered the car it was cheaper to specify the Symphony unit than the glove box mounted 6 CD autochanger. Plus you get a cassette unit! I haven't used the cassette unit but the sound quality of the radio and CD player is pretty good, once you have set the preferences to suit your ears. To me Hi-fi in a car is usually a compromise anyway so this unit is acceptable to me.
This unit also has the GALA function which automatically boosts the volume (to a user specified setting) when the speed increases above a particular limt (100 km/hour, I think) It also has the facility to store traffic announcements made while you are away from the car for replay on your return. I don't know a great deal about how weel this works as I've never used this function.
You can specify a Bose upgrade which adds extra amplifcation and higher quality speakers. I'm haven't heard this but have been told that it does make a noticeable improvement in sound quality.
If you go for the Golf and decide on a TDI engine you may want the additional amplification to drown out the noise of the diesel engine. I'm only half joking!
The TDI installation in the Audi is more acceptable. There must be extra soundproofing!

Hi Stewart!
But you do have 8 or 10 speakers with that system, don't you? There's a great package deal with the Audi that includes a Blaupunkt Navigation / Radio / CD - player. But this action only includes 6 speakers in the front, and cannot be delivered with extra units. So I was wondering if these sound satisfactory...

Hi Bas,
I consulted the Audi literature on this subject and can report the following:
My Symphony audio system has cassette player, 12 station memory, FM and AM radio, integrated 6 CD changer, 140 watts, 8 loudspeakers including centre speaker and bass reflex subwoofer. It sounds fine to me.
My brochure doesn't mention anything about the Blaupunk navigation option only having 6 front speakers. Your dealer should be able to advise.
I hope you get things sorted and are happy with the car you decide upon.
If you have any further opinions on the A3 or Golf experience, I would be happy to help out.

Hi Stewart!
My dealer has helped me out and is willing to build in some speakers in the back, but that would set me back another smack of money. The A3 is already above my company-budget. That's fine by me, as I might just drive the car for 4 years. BUT, if I decide to leave the company within 4 years I have to buy off the contract (i.e. the amount above my budget X the number of months my contract still runs). For now I don't want to leave, but I am having a talk with a competitor this week. You just never know what happens...
Hmmm, if your system has 8 speakers incl. a sub and a center, you might just haven't got speakers in the back. Or do you? The Blaupunkt isn't in the catalogue by the way.

Hi Bas,
My car has two speakers in the back. They are positioned in the side of the car just above the armrest. This is standard specification for UK A3s.

Hi Stewart!
I have hust ordered my A3! I've chosen the 1.9 TDI businessline. This includes climate control and Blaupunkt navigation. I have chosen Lavagrey lacquer and beige interior. And off course some better looking wheels and 8 speakers.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Bas,
You are very welcome.
You have made the right decision in my opinion, and won't regret this. The specification sounds good and nicer wheels will really enhance the (already good) looks of the car.
Great choice of colour too. My car is metallic black which was chosen by my wife. However I would have picked Lava Grey metallic.
I hope you don't have to wait too long for delivery.
Best wishes,
Stewart

That's funny, my girlfriend would have picked metallic black or dark blue!
