Short question about a Linn TT

Posted by: Robbie on 28 May 2003

At the moment I have a Thorens TD-160 MK II with a plain cartridge (Ortofon OMB 20).
I know there is a Linn Basik + akito + Grado Platinum for sale at 225 pound.Fair price or a bit steep ?
Or should I put the money in a better cartridge for the Thorens ?

Regards,
Rob.

I think the asking price is fair - I have the axis turntable. Shits on CD!

Major quarrel with prices for me would go soley on the condition of the stylus.

What arm does your 160 have factory?, to be honest fitted with a rb250 moded OL and a good mm these are probly the most underrated deks of all time, I kid you not, have you serviced it recently ? imho far better than a basic and not far of a sondek, most people fit sondek springs etc, however there is a firm in crowbourgh England that can supply all the service items (when the factory sorts it’s self out) there have been supply problems recently so I’ve been told, one other note my father told me never put trust in a unknown styli, it’s served me well to date.

John,

Thanks for your kind advice. The Thorens has a simple tp-16 arm, so can easily be bettered.
I agree with you that the deck on itself is quite good. Not on par with an Sondek, but not that much behind.
What is it with Linn that an Lp12 with Basik arm beats an axis with Akito arm?

Rob.

Don’t know if you have come across this sitehttp://www.theanalogdept.com/thorens_dept_.htm and this is the guy’s number for partsTechnical and General (tel: 01892 654534)
I currently have one sondek fitted with a ittok only because I bought it that way, just sold the other one to be replaced with, not sure yet, if you were set on a change of dek Dunlop deks are still cheep at the moment lp12’s have rocketed over the last couple of years at least over here and I think I saw a ittok go on eBay for over £300 s/h all of which is against linn at the moment for choices, as to your question not sure I know.

I'd ssuspect the TD-160 will leave a Basik in the dust.

I upgraded from a Thorens TD160MkII with a modded RB250 to an LP12 and I'd agree there isn't that much in it although the LP12 is a bit better.

Goldring 1042 should work well I think, and fairly cheap.
