output / input for tape deck?
Posted by: herm on 11 January 2003
I have a NAC 102 (in fact I have two), a tape deck and a five pin DIN cobra.
Haven't used the tape deck in quite a while, so hence a silly question.
Which input / output on the 102 do I use if I want to tape a concert? I think I have tried all, and I get no satisfaction.
Thanks
Herman

Thanks, Stallion.
Input three, however, is Tuner. Still I tried, and the result was No Dice. Anybody else got an idea?
The interesting part of your response is that I should get another kind of Cobra with four phonos at the dick end, rather than two. Perhaps that's part of my problem, too?

Herm,
Just a few details to add to Marco's post:
On the 102:
Inputs 1-3 only accept an "incoming signal" (so they generally are used for playback-only devices-phono, tuner, cd, *but* can be used for a tape-deck or VCR (though these last two sources will be restricted to playback only if connected to inputs 1-3).
Inputs 4-6 are capable of inputting and outputting a signal (so they are typically used for your recording devices- tape decks,VCRs).
Use the front panel button called "MON" (tape MONitor) to listen to the tape deck or input selector button 4, 5 or 6 (whichever the tape deck is plugged into).
Again, as Marco suggested, make your life easier by purchasing a 4-RCA (phono) to DIN-5 cable from your Naim dealer. Even Naim's "throw away" cable sounds good and saves the hassle of switching connections when you want to listen vs. record with the tape deck.

Hmm, try this.
Herm,
As far as I can remember, only inputs 4, 5 and 6 have ‘record out’ capability.
If you still don’t get it to work I’ll look up the manual.
Mr Tibbs.

Herman,
that is your whole problem - a two-phono lead is always for tuner or CD signal into the preamp.
The four-phono lead adds record outputs, and you *will* need these to record.
Plug the tape deck into input 4, 5 or 6, the tape deck will then record whatever signal is appearing at the speakers.
cheers, Martin

Well, thanks for your responses so far. I plugged the tape-deck in both my sistems (in case one was fucked), and plugged it into all the 4 / 5 / 6 inputs, and I'm still not recording anything.
No need to get out your manuals. I'm guessing (as Martin does) I really need to get a four-dick phono. This is what I'll do next week (might take some time out here), and I'll report back for posterity's sake.
Or just because I'm desperately not achieving anything yet.

late last night I got an e-mail from Ed Needham, who used to post here (in drag, though) but was advised not to after the AudioWorks hoopla (or banned, lord knows), telling me (like Martin did) all I needed was a four phono Chord, and did I want his?
I love this guy. Perhaps he's 750 miles away, but if I look at my gear, about half of it comes from him, and I trust him a whole lot more than the Naim dealer in my home town (whom I trust, but I'm talking about degrees).
So I'll post later on about the final results.

The Naim owners club comes to the rescue
Nice to know there are people out there willing to go the extra mile(s).
BTW, if you look at a five pin din plug, the centre pin is the ground (0V) connection.
Two of the pins to one side of the ground pin are channels 1 and 2 into the preamp.
The two pins on the other side of the ground pin are channels 1 and 2 out of the preamp – in other words, the output to the tape recorder.

I never had a problem with Tibbsyman.

Well, allright: deal! I have a dim memory of some tussles in Wales - but that's a long time ago.

No, I didn;t get to tape that concert, but there's plenty others coming. And I'd like to be able to play some old tapes on occasion (the ugly ol' deck's not even in the regular sistem; I have to get it out for these occasions).
One disconcerting thing is: tapes from twenty years back usually sound better, and that's because the quality of the signal I'm getting from the radio / tv cable is much worse than what I used to catch from the ether in the early eighties - including the effects of pretty pathetic equipment (a seventies Marantz receiver) and physical degradation of tapes over the decades.
I talked with audioworks' Ed about this, as he has a NAT02 on offer; but it's just not worth it in this neck of the woods. Or should I ditch cable signal and go back to an arial? Live concerts can be such fun when you're into classical and you're basically familiar with most of the repertoire. Where I used to live in the US the reception was excellent (living in the hills) and there was a concert by a different symphony orchestra virtually every week night. I listened every night; now I rarely do, because the sound is grey.

I've been wondering about what tuners do to music and was going to get a cheap NAD tuner when I got my gear. My dealer suggested a Caspain tuner for my Naim equipment here in LA. He said cheap tuners could sound clouded or distant. I never tried out anything else. But I listen to the radio 8 hours a day at least when I'm home. I seem to get good reproduction, but then I'm in direct line to Mt. Wilson which sends signals all over the LA basin. I haven't tried my satelite reception thru my Digital cable for the TV yet.

I'll give it a week, maybe two.
“ Incidentally, Tibbsy, I'd like to think you, Herm and myself can put our differences behind us this year and start over. The aggro isn't worth it.”
Stallion,
Forgive me, I didn’t realise we’d fallen out!
I really must pay greater attention in future.
Mr Tibbs
Oh alright then, I'll try my best not to upset anyone.

Three weeks, tops, otherwise the medicine is magic, and we could all use some.
On topic: I have been angling towards reception with a T-aerial, but all I get is a couple of big almighty pop stations, and no classical whatsoever.

Oh, and say hi to Freddy the Ferret

K-rect. It's a long time since we agreed.
I live (along with a couple other folks) in a country the size of L.A. and Orange County combined, with nothing higher on the horizon but a dog's turd (a lot of those though!) and I ain't gettin' nothing.
I agree that a really good tuner would warrant more than a silly li'l T-aerial. But as I said, I'm kinda concerned that twenty years ago a T-aerial sufficed for a pretty splendid reception, and now I'm getting no satisfaction. So I fear these dickheads been messing with the transmission, radar, whatever they're called.
Perhaps all I can do is immigrate to the antipodeans. Are you ready? FM seems to be pretty good out there, and I'm not too hot about the way the bathwater is turning down the drain here either (did I tell you about that?). Hi-di-ho!
