nac 82

hi.
I'am considering an upgrade from a nait 3 to an nac82. And so i have an 82 on demo from my dealer together with a hi-cap. When i run the 82 with my own flatcap 2 it sound good (not to much difference with the nait3 ) Well more controlled music and the music is more open. When i install the hi-cap i don't really hear any difference(i mean better sounding) than when i use my flatcap2. So i don't really understand because i thougt there must be a big difference between the both power supplies.
has any body got an idea how this is possible.
i must ad that my flatcap has been modified by my dealer.
the whole system contains of CD5, Nait3, Flatcap2 and NAP180. For speakers i use B&W CDM6.

I had a Nait 3. Went to a 32.5/250 which was an improvement. The 82/250 is however quite different. Much more detail. Have you NACA5? You really should hear a significant difference with the 82/180 over a Nait 3. A Hicap on the 82 is noticeably better than a Flatcap also. In fact I switched from 2 Flatcaps to a Hicap on my 82.

Let the Hicap settle in and warm up. The last one I got had only been powered off for eight hours between purchase and install and it still took a couple of weeks to get going properly, but it was certainly noticable when it did. Suddenly.....music!

thanks for your reactions.
The hi-cap is not a brand new one an has run in already. this also applies for the nac82. i believe they are ex demo models of my dealer
I don't use the NACA5- cables. i don't really know what kind of cables i have the dealer advised me to take the ones i use know. And as far as i know he also uses that kind of cable.

do you have the NAPSC? Seems to be received wisdom that this is a Good Idea.

The Nac 82 MUST have the napsc to operate - it can't without one. New style napsc is worth a go too..

AJ,
I went the same route as you:
nait3
nait3+180
nait3+hicap+180
82+hicap+180
82+hicap/hicap+180
82+hicap/hicap+250
The 82 is HUGELY better than a nait3. Let it burn in for a while (mine took 6 weeks).
The second Hicap also adds a lot - and I've not tried a Supercap yet.

I went from Nac 62/HiCap to 102/HiCap to 82/single HiCap then 2 then s'cap. The improvements were always very obvious and did take some time to fully develop. The upgrades on the p'supplies for the 82 seemed just as significant as going from 62>102>82.
Was also helped by going from 180 to 250[I think 82/250 is a very nicley balanced combo.]
The "burn-in" period is v.important with power supplies and usually means you can look forward to improving sound quality over the next month or two.

I went from nait to nait/hicap to 102/hicap to 82/hicap to 82/hicap/hicap, and last week, I ended up at 82/supercap via my friendly dealer's sale.
The 82 is a superb preamp. When Naim claim it can be improved via the addition of power supplies, they aren't joking. The 82/hi was good. I found the second hicap to bring a great deal more sense to the music.
Adding the supercap has been a revelation. It wasn't for the first day, but my and my wife's jaws keep dropping at what we're now hearing.
Source is CD2, back end is 250 into Allaes. Nice balanced system.
Summary, the second hicap brings more music; but the supercap brings the music alive. Warning - only listen to a supercap if you can afford it.

Yeah, I am also looking for this answer as well. A used supercap deal is waiting for me.

Alex,
I purchased a 2nd S/H hicap for my 82 and IMHO, the improvment worth it. I haven't tried a Supercap tho (I think it will come along with a 52 someday....)

Not heard the 82 w/2 hi's, but I ran mine with one. The Hi was used and run-in. It took almost forever for it to gell and sound worth the price.
Recently super capped the thing, skipping over the two hi cap route. The entire system seemed to take a giant step backwards from even the one hi cap.
The 82 in and of itself takes a LONG time to warm up, even a used one. The power supplies don't ingratiate themselves any faster, in my experience.
When the addition of the hi cap did finally hit it's stride, it was amazing! (I'm not there yet w/ the super)
I'd counsel patience, a healthy does of it.

thanks for all your replies.
Well i think i have to a bit more patience and give the hicap more time to warm up.
Has any one got an opionion about a 82 with just a flatcap2 because i don't have the budget right now to buy the 82 and a hicap. Is it worth to buy the 82 now and save money for a hi-cap or buy the 82 and hicap at the same time so the 82 really can make music.

thanks for your reaction adam,
Well i have the nac82 standing on an audio rack (not an FRAIM).the rack is a metal construction in wich glass platesd lay for the audio equipement. The Flatcap is standing about 50 cm away from the 82 (0,5 meter). I don't know exactly what the napsc is. is it the litle power supply that comes with the 82 for the lighting of the front of the pre-amp and the control for the remote control, this one is about 75 cm (0,75 meters) away from the 82.

Seems that this has already been answered.Have to own up to an error on my part;I went from 102/HiCap to 82/x2 HiCaps in one go![Put it down to impatience and a wife that can never quite remember how many boxes there were before]
All I can say is that the first jump was huge and 2Hicaps>s'cap equally impressive even though only 40% of s'cap power supplies used.I found that the best improvement was on vinyl which now sounds superb.
I agree about being patient with regard to power supplies settling in[something that I have managed to come to terms with!]

well thanks for all your reactions.
my dealer is coming to my house next week and i will ask him his opinion on the whole system layout( regarding positioning the nac82 and power suplies and all) and what can be improved so the nac82 really is comming to it's right.
