Bruce Springsteen to play Superbowl halftime show.

Posted by: JamieL on 26 January 2009

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform live during the half time interval of Superbowl XLIII this Sunday.

I had not seen this mentioned on the forum so though some might be interested to know.

Judging by past performances, Prince, Blues Brothers, U2, Tom Petty, etc, it will probably be a medley of very well known tracks, 10-15 minutes long. Not necessarily a performance to wait for if you are not a fan of the three hours of surrounding American Football.

For UK viewers, the game will be shown on BBC1 from 11pm, and also on Sky Sports. I am not sure that both have rights to show the half time performance, which will probably be around 1.30 ish, GMT.

NBC are showing the game in the U.S.A.

At least we can be sure that there will be no 'costume malfunctions' unlike Janet Jackson claimed she had when exposing one breast to rather unimpressed football fans a few years ago.

I am rather looking forward to this years game, and Bruce Springsteen sounds like a good choice for the half time show.

I did not mean to say that Bruce Springsteen is not a performer worth waiting up to see, but rather that the nature of a 10-15 minute medley, to an audience wanting to see a football match is not the best situation to see any performer play.

I once went to the footy final in Sydney (free tix - I wouldn't ever pay for the privilege of watching a bunch of overpaid, arrogant, misogynist ar$eh01e$ run into each other). Our half-time show was Shannon Noll. "Who the f&^% is Shannon Noll?" I hear you ask. Yeah, me too.

Good company and a good time - all totally unrelated to anything that the thick-necked-thugs and 15-minute-of-fame Mr Noll did out on the field, though.

Bruce isn't so bad. But let's pray for fully functioning wardrobes for ALL the band members. CC flashing a booby? Nooooooooo!

...For those of us who love the NFL (yep even in Durham UK!) ..and allowing for the fact that my beloved Dallas Cowboys crashed and burned this season (not even making the play-offs!)

I'm still looking forward to the game and to seeing the boss live even in such "tacky" circumstances ..Although if he chooses to plug his new album I may not be so interested!

The commercials can be better than some games and most bands.

I really can not predict the result of this game. Yes the Steelers are favourites, but that has not worried the Cards in any of their games on the way there. I think this will be a fun game.

Is this a great game or what? The longest play ever in Superbowl history by the defensive player of the year James Harrison.

... can't believe so that the Cards were not able to bring him down earlier.

Nice show by Bruce and the E-Street Band, good song selection.

Bruce gave the crowd a nice show but IMHO Prince's show last year was more memorable.

Last year, 2008, it was Tom Petty, who I always enjoy, but Prince in 2007 was fantastic ... and in the pouring rain, no less!

Just surfacing, thought it was an excellent game.

Thought Bruce was good, but I think the best halftime show I have seen was 'The Blues Brothers' a few years ago.

I also thought the national anthem was OK, and not the endless wailing we sometimes get, the Simpsons got it spot on with their baseball episode.

I'm biased, but I thought Bruce & the E Street Band were great. It is extraordinarily difficult to convey the power and the energy of Bruce's 3-hour live shows into a 12-minute time slot, but I thought they did a great job of showing a glimpse of what a Bruce concert is like.

yes Hudson was great and I thought Bruce was great as well. Fun time in our national sport.

What you didn't like the "wardrobe malfunction" halftime show?! That was probably the worst in quite a while. But Prince was absolutely amazing, even though I think the sound was screwed up so you could not hear his guitar solo as I remember. Great performance. Even though I love Tom Petty, IMHO it was pretty average. Bruce was fun, but not nearly as entertaining as Prince. Or even when Macca did his show...but I always loved Up With People Big Grin

I was actually there in Tampa during media week working with athletes and some sponsors and I met Nils Lofgren who was really nice. What a freakin' talented musician. Played keyboards on Neil Young's After the Gold Rush (with little or no keyboard experience), great solo career and with the E Street band. I have always loved his first self titled solo album after Grin. He did not get much camera time at the Super Bowl.

I know there are more sophisticated entertainments, and being in a small game close up is a thrill, but that one yesterday was as big and blustery as you can get. Just outrageous in scale. All I could think of was our answer to Rome's gladiators in a controlled sort of combat. Certainly not as much blood and guts, and no christians were sacrificed, but there have never been bigger combatants and filmed in slow motion for all critical moments. The visuals from an artist's viewpoint was amazing.

too much fun, but I wished the other team had won, only due to the nasty side of the Steelers.

Who gave the most penalty yards, mostly for personal fouls?

Ooooh Howard! With the american football shout out! I am impressed! Now that I have that out of the way, I agree with Wolf that it was a game of beautiful images, from the first, challenged and reversed touchdown of the steelers to the last play of the game. But I prefer the steelers as an organization, mainly because of the tradition and the rooney family And this is coming from a raider fan! I know a crap organization when I see it - and I am really not crazy about the Cardinals wacky owner. Not that they are crap but they have some serious issues (Anquan Boldin for one) But I think Wolf is referring to what the steelers themselves refer to as the "ugly" game. Heinz Ward is a very nice guy (i met him a couple of times) but on the field he is known as a complete jerk. And there's the really questionable, near spearing tackles of Ryan Clark. James Harrison is a great defensive player, but there was a tv shot of his punt coverage on special teams, with Harrison punching a cardinals player in the kidneys while the player was on his hands and knees. Ugly, but that is part of the game. I really dont mind it - it is an artistic but also violent game. But I WOULD take Larry Fitzgerald on my team over Heinz Ward any day.

The reports now is that the 'live' show by BS wasn't, it was just singback. The argument is that's it's simply impossible to set up a modern live concert in five minutes.
