Two pieces a can think of have literally reduced me to tears:

'Skeletons' off Rickie Lee Jones Pirates album

and

'Cannonball' off the Damien Rice album

Barber's adagio for strings always has a big impact on me as well

for a quick fix of depression I find that The Eternal by Joy Division seems to hit the spot

for an uplift then You Make Me Feel by Sylvester is a jolly ol' number

Summertime - Miles Davis
Simultaneously melancholic and optimistic.

Incredibly passionate and deep.

Synphony No 7 - Shostakovich
I love the way the crescendo resolves, really wonderful harmonies are at play here. I prefer Bernstein's interpretation to Gergiev's.

Kensal Rising - Swayzak
Lord knows I've tried not to, but every time I play this song I just gotta dance!

...Redemption Song - Bob Marley ...always raises the hairs on the back of my neck.

Anything by Celine Dion...that would move me faster than anything.

But actually...EbtGirl "The Night I heard Caruso Sing"

For me Springsteen always tells the best stories. Three of his tracks that I find can move me to tears are

1. Wreck on the Highway from The River - a sad tale
2. Gypsy Biker from Magic - story of Soldier coming home from war in coffin
3. Long Walk Home from Magic. The Magic album was well rather magic for my wife and I, the soundtrack to our last year living in Oz. The song brings back many memories of our emotional Long Walk Home.

Plenty of other music that moves in other ways but I like the emotion and simplicity of a Springsteen story.

Call me a sentimental fool -
- Eric Bogle's Green Fields of France by The Fureys
- Streets of Sorrow / Birmingham Six - The Pogues
- Fields of Athenry - even when it's The Dropkick Murphys, but especially when I come across Munster men on the ferry
- Boulder to Birmingham - Emmylou Harris
- Men Of the West - my grandfather supposedly 'inspired' William Rooney to write this
- The Dark End Of The Street - James Carr
- The Foggy Dew - Sinéad O'Connor amongst others
- and even Joseph Locke singing Danny Boy
- and (Lontano's reminds me) Human Touch
all do it for me

Just about anything from Jackson Browne's first four albums are the first that come to mind....

Also there is something about the song Harbor Lights by Boz Scaggs that gets me every time.

And of course Who Knows Where the Time Goes by FC or Eva Cassidy never fails to reduce me to a quivering bowl of jello

Call me sentimental...

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan can transport me utterly at times-and I have no idea what he is singing about. That is quite an achievement!

Some of the sharp honesty of Billy Bragg as his most personal I find quite moving. Check out 'Tank Park Salute' from Don't Try This At Home.

These spring to mind: Sinead O'Connor singing Troy, and The The singing Kingdom of the Rain (and she's on that one too).

I know everyone goes on about Blue, but for me Clouds has better songs and better stories on it - sadly doesn't seem to be available new on vinyl...

I would like to second the votes for:

Joni Mitchell - Both sides now

and

The Blue Nile - Peace at last

Has anyone heard the Blue Nile 'High' album?

I have yet to find a copy in HMV.

regards,

Schizo.

For me sadly ordinary. His great voice is intact (and the production values) but the songs mostly felt like B sides. Nothing to engage me for long. Cannot recall when I last played it.
