encouragement for dedicated spur installation in switzerland

Posted by: rocketeer on 23 February 2004

hello everybody

recently, i called up the nearest electrician and asked him about a single spur installation. to my surprise, he told me that he had done this before for "audiophile" customers, and instantly agreed to pass by for checking the situation in my rental flat. this afternoon, the installation was done (in the limits of law).

a new fuse socket was installed within the existing consumer unit. the new spur had to be routed through the existing duct in the walls. additionally, wires which lead through the same duct as the new spur had to be rewired to another existing fuse socket. only a standard thickness of wire could be routed through the relatively narrow duct, certainly not as thick as described by others here on the forum. finally, the electrician told me that the dedicated spur HAS to comprise a separate live, neutral AND earth lead (you can imagine that i was totally happy about this ;-)). my system now is connected to a music line power bar, which is pluged into a single wall outlet, which again is wired to the spur ( i hope that my english terminology regarding the "spur" topic is not confusing). the installation costed exactly 500 swiss francs, which is about 300 euros, which is about 200 GBP. suprisingly, most of the work was connecting the wires in the consumer unit rather than routing them through the wall.

earlier, i was quite sceptical about such installations, based on my own experimental experience. so, i was very curious to listen to my system after the expert's installation. the system was down for about 5 hours and then powered up for 2 hours before i pressed the play button. what then came to my ears was quite a step beyond my expectations! needless to describe the improvement after about one hour of listening (and after collecting the pieces of my jaw from the floor!), since it was described here in many other spur topics, but i just want to tell everybody again: you cannot imagine how worth it is, till you do such an installation. i can tell for sure that there is no box upgrade in terms of VFM that comes even close to a dedicated spur! i hope that after this post at least people in switzerland are encouraged to call their electricians, since the installation, as done in my flat, does not violate any law and is done within a few hours. the best spent 500 swiss francs in my whole upgrading career!

Hello Dimitri,

Good for you that you decided to take the plunge. Did you ask the electrician whether he actually believed that dedicated spurs were of benefit to the hifi or whether he just believed they were of benefit to his business?

I was lucky in that my landlord had a spur installed before I moved in -- just for me and at no cost!

Dimitri,

VERY interesting info !
I'm living in Horgen, just "up the lake" and I'm contemplating exactly what you did.
Would you mind to either send me a PT or to my private mail ?

Thanks & regards

Salut Dimitri

Thanks for the interesting info.
Not all electricians are this open minded!

Btw. if you use a music line power bar, then do you have the german "Schuko-Stecker" in it? If so, I suppose you use also the german naim power cables, instead of the swiss? Where did you get them, and how much did they cost...

Well, as Thomas suspected above, the electrician probably was more interested in benefiting his business rather than providing me with superb sound in the first place. But at least, he was not one of those "on-off"-guys who looks at you as if you just came from the moon. Instead, he gently suggested that the system drawing current directly from the consumer unit could be a reason for the expected sound improvement, etc...

my music line power bar actually has the german "schuko-stecker", and so do all of my naim power cables. finally, the power bar is pluged into a hms (hmselektronik.de) wall outlet, which again is a schuko-version. i have been using this schuko setup for a few months now, and especially the hms outlet definitely brings further improvement to the sound. i got it on ebay, cost is around 40 Euro. power bar and mains leads were ordered from oliver hüwel in konstanz (high-end-am-bodensee.de). cannot remember prices exactly, but must be around 40 Euros for the bar and 10 Euros for a mains lead. write him an email or call him up. he's a very friendly guy who will send you these things over to switzerland. the music line bar, to my ears, was superior to the relatively expensive "sun-leiste" bar i was using with my former non-naim system...

i had some more listening today and played amel larrieux. god, either she was really there, or the systems is singing now...

Thanks for the details Dimitri!

Some time ago, they opened up the road to fix the water and gas pipes and we had announced interruptions. As they also announced an interrupion in electricity I was not very amused. So I shut down my hifi and plugged it out of the wall in the morning. As I came back in the evening I powered everything back on and was prepared for worse sound (as usual when gone cold). But it was better than before!
The next day I made a fatal error: I asked the electrician out in the building site if they had replaced the mains wires for new ones. He said yes, and I smiled. He was surprised by my reaction and I explained him, that my hifi sounded better now. He didn't look at me like I was from the moon, but at least from neptun!! Eek

I found the website of this german naim dealer as I looked for a Hutter dealer around here (as there is still no distributor in switzerland!). Probably I do a trip to Konstanz in spring.

happy listening
