J*** vocal al***s on vinyl

Posted by: rega1 on 14 February 2009

I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of some good jazz vocal LP's. Vinyl is my main source. I have some Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. I am looking for some new suggestions, "diamond in the rough" type. Preferably older releases from the 60's / 70's but new would be fine also.

thanks in advance

It's all a matter of taste Rega mate, but have you checked out Claire Martin on Linn Records?

Seems to me you are missing the great Sarah Vaughn. Try "Sarah Vaughn" with the small group led by Clifford Brown on Emarcy or maybe At Mister Kellys for starters. Most "jazz" singers quite frankly don't do much for me, though I do have a liking for Claire Martin/Stacey Kent, even if I consider them more pop than jazz. . Don't forget the greatest jazz singer and musician of all time--Louis Armstrong--his early hot 5/7 and early 30's big band recordings, which contain many vocals, are simply unmatched.

I like Etta James, rougher voice and she messes with Billie Holiday songs to make them her own, she does a lovely tribute to Lady Day as she grew up with her on records. "Mystery Lady"

Of the Ella Songbooks I like the Harold Arlen the best, great songwriter with a positive bent.

I like jazz mostly in the evenings, lights low, drink, and your main squeeze next to you for the concert. I really like restaurants that have good jazz, seems to set the mood right.

Try "The Dana Owens Album" by Queen Latifah.
To begin with, her reading of "Lush Life", a rich, warm, fruitful tune full of nuance and mystery only hinted at by the blues, may be the best female jazz vocal i have heard.

if you program your cd to skip "baby get lost" on track 1 and "Mercy, Mercy" on track 9, you are left with one of the mellowest, yummiest rides to be had with a female jazz vocalist.

highly recommended.

She's not a diamond.

More of a lump of iron. Razz

Radka Toneff was a great singer.
Elusivedisc will sell you a copy of Fairytales, witch is a classic.

Antonio Forcione & Sabina Sciubba: Meet Me in London . You can buy it from Naim E-store on vinyl.

Let's hope Mr Costello doesn't post on here.

Elvis?

He left the building ages ago.

On vinyl, there are some very good Billie Holiday discs. Then you have Armstrong and Fitzgerald together on Verve (remastered and issued on Speakers Corner).

For something a little different, but certainly for the twilight hours you could try Lotte Lenya. I have several LPs (CBS Masterworks) which, I believe, are available as CD if you can't find a 2nd hand LP. She was married to Kurt Weill so is mostly associated with his work. Most people, however, know her as Rosa Klebb in the Bond film From Russia With Love - don't let that put you off.

Hi rega1.

This is positively one of the best jazz vocal "diamond in the rough" albums ever! A true classic. I know there are vinyl copies out there (I picked one up, used at Dusty Groove). Also have the cd copy and it sounds very good.

Also love these:

Great singing, and a great way to get into Thelonious Monk.

Great live album, lots of magic on this one.

I have an early Nina Simone and used to play it but now the voice is too grating. Billie is getting that way too but boy can she emote with a rough voice. I'd much rather hear Ella or Sarah. I have Sassy Sings the Tivoli on vinyl, bought it for $2, wow. I only have 1 Krall but it's good for a nice romantic dinner.
