Stravinsky bargain CD offer of the century

Posted by: Jeremy Marchant on 05 December 2008

All the stereo recordings Stravinsky made for Columbia of his own music for CBS.
The sound on the original vinyl could be a bit thin and screechy, but the remastering may have helped here. The performances and interpretation are fine or better.
And the price is.... £18 for 22 CDs.

Those preferring to buy from a British retailer, will get the same for a still amazing price (£29) from www.mdt.co.uk

Includes Dumbarton Oaks and other neo classical works like Apollon musagete (just tying in a few other threads).

I picked this box set up for the US equivalent early this year. Bargain hardly describes it.

I have been heartened by the recent trend toward super-cheap (per-disc) reissues from the majors. The recent Argerich edition of all of her solo DG recordings; the Oistrakh, Cziffra, Nat, and so on releases from EMI; the Gould Edition (though I'm not biting on that one). If the same pattern continues, how long until there's a new super-cheap Bruno Walter Edition, or Klemperer, or Schuricht, or Geza Anda - oh, the mind boggles at all of the possibilities.
