New Music Recommendation
Posted by: Not For Me on 08 January 2003
For those of you with fond memories of late 70's / early 80's post punk funk (like A Certain Ratio, 23 Skidoo, Gang of Four) I would recommend a new LP by "III" called "III". They appear to be an Amercian group, and have a sound that brings back the feel of early / mid period ACR, with bass, trumpets, slight discordance and attitude.
Other than that, I can endorse "Donna Kebab", a fine reworking of the greatest piece of music ever recorded, Donna Summer - "I feel love" There is unfortunately no artist, label or other ID on the one sided vinyl, but it puts a few extra noises and a might kick drum in with Donna, and sets the cycle to spin.

Sound's good, although I'm having trouble finding any further information about it since "III" doesn't seem to make search engines happy. Where did you find it?
If you like "Entertainment"-style Gang of Four, the Ex Models are also worth checking out. Similar in sound and attitude, although they are a bit more in the math-rock and less in the dance direction.

I found III in the Rough Trade shop in Covent Garden.
I will see it the sleeve has any contact info or a distributor.

Sounds ace - may have to get it...
If you like that sort of stuff, I presume you know all about ESG(?). I also have a fantastic NY punk-funk compilation the name of which I can't recall off the top of my head. It came out on double LP a couple oof years ago.
BTW, had great fun doing that 23 Skidoo live stuff for you last night - hadn't heard it in over 10 years!!!

Kevin,
Yes , I know ESG - I bought thier stuff in the 80's, and the two recent releases - one of them new material. The live material is cracking, really tight drum sound and bass, with scratchy guitars and "who you lookin's at" vocal.
I look forward to the 23 Skidoo !

I think the complilations were :
Disco Not Disco and Disco Not Disco 2. The first one was best.
