Linn Classik versus Nait-2
Posted by: Top Cat on 18 August 2002
Hi folks.
Much as we love our little Nait-2 based second system, we're willing to sacrifice a bit of sound quality for convenience and a better cd player than the DVD player we currently use*.
Mrs-to-be Cat wishes to have a remote control which operates both cd and volume controls, and I don't want to sacrifice too much of the boppiness of the Nait-2, and we both want something which will be happy operating under less than perfect conditions (i.e. on a shelf rather than a dedicated rack).
The obvious candidate is a Linn Classik (pref. with Tuner, but that's optional). Given that we're using a cheap DVD player as cd player (Samsung 709) we realise that some of the better features of the Nait-2 are probably wasted on its current application. I reckon we'd get more music from a Classik with its cd player than with the Samsung into the Nait-2 - am I wrong though?
So, the question is: chrome bumpered Nait-2, great nick and great sound - how much to sell it for and how much should we expect to pay for a Classik.
Or should we forget about it and put up with the DVD and lack of remote volume control?
* only willing to sacrifice the sound quality as it's a secondary system, and not our main system.

Hi Topcat,
Please, don't swap a Nait 2 for something like the Linn Classik.
I know why you're considering it. It also crossed my mind once to simply buy the Classik and forget about all the fuss of mixing and matching, etc.
But that was some time ago!
Buy a s/h Marantz CD63KI! It sounds pretty good through a Nait-2 (probably much better then your DVD-player) The CD63KI has a very good working variable output, so you can easily adjust the volume of your CD-player very comfortably by remote, without using the (annoying) volume of your Nait-2.
When I had my first (also chrome bumpered) Nait-2, I used it with a Marantz CD63KI and some small Monitor Audio's and it sounded really great!
(especially for that kinda money)
So, I wouldnt swap your Nait to fast for a Classik. Althoug I must admit the Classik is a beautiful finished and looking piece of HiFi, it's not up to the performance of yout Nait!
(the Classik sounds pretty decent overall, but a little too polite, smoooth, imho)
Greetings,
Alco

I haven't listened to a classik, but the impressions I've been given suggest that it certainly won't be as interesting as a Nait.
From what I've seen/heard, a more "sound effective" solution would be to add a reasonable mid-priced CD (e.g. Arcam 72) and a Nait 5, slightly more than a Classik, but is likely to murder it.
Be aware that the Nait 5 has some great functionality for it's pre-amp section.
Even excluding the amount of inputs (about 5 from what I remember), the fact that it's remote controlled, you can also set at least one of the inputs to by-pass the volume control, which means that if you're linking it into an AV system to power your front speakers, it is MUCH easier.

In my view, the Classik is a very clever bit of kit, marketed at a very particular clientele. It has great functionality with timer, tuner, cd and amp all in one box and it's reasonably musical in a Linn way - i.e. lots of authority and pace.
The Nait-2 is an old, veiled, power-limited amplifier which sings sweet music, no matter what crappy source you happen to attach to it. It's not neutral and it doesn't have fancy functionality, but it's bloody brilliant at portraying events. If you replace it, don't sell it. You won't get anything reasonable for it and if the Cats have kids you can pass it on to them in the fullness of time!
If Mrs-to-be-Cat doesn't really want tuner and timer facilities, the same money as a new Classik would buy you a Rega Planet/Mira combo which, provided they're placed on a reasonably solid shelf (one atop the other if necessary), are very musical and fully remote controlled.

Frank.

I heard a classic, directly compared to an Arcam system, alpha 7 cd /7 amp combo a moon ago. This combo was on par with the Classik. Classik looks cool though!
If you're not to bothered about sound quality then it will be OK and you will have a happy MRS T-CAT, and kittens ;-).
Another alternative if you want 'life style' design and small boxes are the Cyrus stuff DADcd1 etc. Not bad for what they are!
For the money that you may get for the Nait2, keep it, and pick up an early CD3 to go with it!
Cheers

Cyrus is indeed also another option.
It looks neat (way better then most naim stuff, imho) it sounds fairly good, and is fully remote.
I recently picked up a 'brandnew'* Cyrus 7 for 50% off newprice! (*= used as a demo in a store for a short moment)
I bought it because I feld no financial risc in doing so, and just out of curiosity how is would compare to me old Naity.
It came pretty close I must admit, and the remote sure was a nice bonus over the Nait-2, but....
(for the same price) it's already on its way to a new owner. (nuff said ?)
But for a second system I could easily live with a Cyrus III (or 7) and a Cyrus dAD1.5 or dAD3 and some Mission 780's (they're great!,btw)
