I've listened to it now for a few days, and all I need say really is that there a some things no-one else could do; several future classics (Sudden Town, Mr. Kennedy), a glorious multi-guitar break on 'Unprotected Love' (great title), and possibly Robyn's most beautiful track ever, 'La Cherite', and I haven't a clue what its lyrics are about.
Of equal merit is Kimberley Rew's solo album Great Central Revisited, available from www.bongo-beat.com (ish)

Nick,
Do you have the Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians live album "Gotta Let this Hen Out"? Its very good and contains a couple of Soft Boys songs inc. the wonderful "Face of Death".
It looks like this:
It is (or was) also available on video which I know becuase my Dad filmed it.

I really like that live album and tried a studio album ("Tropical Fish Mandela" is the only track I remember) which I found rather disappointing so didn't really pursue it any further. The lyrics are great and "My Wife and My Dead Wife" still makes me chuckle to this day.
And yes my Dad is certainly the coolest 60 year old I know. As well as Robyn Hitchcock he has been involved in videos with Black Flag, Alien Sex Fiend, Hanoi Rocks, Link Wary and lots of very dodgy old punk bands. He has even met Jimmy Page (at a studio in St Annes where he recorded "Jugula" with Roy Harper).
Sadly he has also fell in with a bunch of old hippies and as well as filming the last proper Stonehenge in 1984 (Roy Harper, The Enid and Hawkwind) he filmed Hawkwind on thier preposterously OTT "The Chronicle of The Black Sword" tour (the one based on the Elric The Womanslayer novels by Micheal Moorcock where Moorcock actually appeared on stage amid swirling dry ice and read sections of his books to introduce each song -- it was all very "Spinal Tap"). He even got to know Nick Turner briefly -- a man who managed the extraordinary feat of getting himself thrown out of Hawkwind for taking too many drugs.
Most recently he has been filming the Blackpool Punk festival and had the most unpleasant task of interviewing Gary Bushell about his recently reformed band "The Gonads" and had to listen to Bushell explain how he had slpit the band up in the first place as punk had "sold out" and had started it up again as in recent years the Punk revival has re-discovered its roots. Nothing to do with the rise and subseuqent demise of your career in tabloid journalism then Gary?
You'll find some streaming clips from various videaos some of which my Dad has ben invovled in at http://rameses.com/screenedge/music.htm. You'll find Robyn Hitchcock about half way down.

Matthew,
Interesting news - is there any chance you could find a copy of this video for me; I've been looking for one for ages.
