UNITI & Aiff

Posted by: Tog on 08 September 2010

After a number of emails to Naim they finally conceded that the Uniti and Qute are different platforms to the HDX/Serve and that there are no plans to update the Uniti to accept Aiff - am I alone in thinking this shortsighted. Surely a software update would be all that is needed.

Promising but aiff to mp3 - why would I want to do that on a Uniti?

In my original post I suspected Naim was leading me towards their Unitserve and I don't have a problem with that per se (well my wife will when she sees the price)

I have a lot of ripped music in aiff - I don't want to rip it all again - I take it I can transfer it to the Unitiserve....pleeease...

With 'promising' I rather meant the chance that Majestic will support transcoding to WAV in the future. Configurable (!) transcoding (and support of hires!) would solve our problems.

The only music that can be stored *ON* the UnitiServe is music that was ripped *ON* the UnitiServe however the UnitiServe will amalgamate all the music that it finds (and can read) in any network shares into its available music pool so if you have AIFFs on your network on a share and the UnitiServe can see those AIFF files then they will be made available by the UnitiServe for playback.

Cheers

The UnitiServe has this. The Majestic software (in its current incarnation) does not.

So that does make the Unitiserve a very expensive bespoke uPnP server (with a disk thrown in) ?

Beautifully made but expensive nonetheless ...

If all you're wanting to do is serve your existing AIFF files and not rip anything new direct from CD then in your case it provides functionality that you would appear to have no requirement for.

Not so fast ..young Phil ... about half my music could be re-ripped (if that is a word) and I do have a use for the organizational talents of the
Unitserve.

I need a reliable uPnP server - that I can control from ipod/ipad. Would tags used on the external shares still be organized and controlled by the Naim software?
