CD5 not working
Posted by: stv on 08 May 2003
I have had a CD5 for just under a year now, and it has already been back to naim to fix a glitch.
But last night it pretty much stopped working alltogether! A little green light is on mostof the time to the lower right of the screen area, and it just6 wont play. Except one or two times when it really behaved oddly! garbled music payed and the stop button, if held down made it play correctly for a while then finally stopped the cd - never to play again!
woe is me!! and yes i tried with other cd's
has anyone experienced anythiong like this! - are naim in on this forum and can they help as i love my naim but two problems within a year after spending much money and time on the unit i must admit to feel the shine wearing off a bit!!

Steve,
Have you tried totally disconnecting the CD5 from the mains for 10mins or so and then switching it back on again. I've heard rumours the on-board processor can get its knickers in a twist, resulting in this kind of behaviour. Might be worth a try anyway, before the enraged phone-call to Salisbury.

It was turned off over night and still nothing this morning - however i didn't actually unplug it. I just switched it...

One other thing to try, is switching it on and off again several times in succession. I used to have a VCR which used to respond to this treatment, sometimes it would take dozens of rapid on/off cycles but then suddenly clear itself. I don't know if it would work with the CD5 though.
Otherwise, looks like its back to Salisbury then - two failures in 12 months isn't good though is it? I wonder if there are others out there with similar experience?

Hi Steve,
sorry to hear about the problems you have had with your CD5. I am at a bit of a loss to explain the failure you have experienced as the CD5 is generally extremely reliable.
I suggest you contact your dealer at the earliest opportunity and we'll sort things out for you ASAP.

Hi,
Karly, that's a bit harsh... unforgivable!
Given that the control circuitry is based on a microcontroller which is outsourced (along with all the other components including the transport itself and that the average size of this computer on a chip is about 5mm square it's reasonable to assume that a few bad examples slip through the net.
I worked on a motorola 6809 microprocessor once and it had been static damaged and it was impossible to tell but for trying to add 2 particular numbers - which would make it crash.
It sounds more like corrupt EEPROM or something in this case which is a bit different. But still not Naim's fault!
I'm sure you were just asking before you took it to the dealer to see if you were wasting your time. Don't build yourself up for that kind of output. I know it's a pain to have to send things back and wait but someone like microdirect would have you wait 3 weeks just for a decision - at least Naim just get on with it.

diamonds - she'll pretty much have to...

I am a pretty forgiving man.....
...and have found out a cause of the fault - not technically, but the cd is placed on a shelving system (ladderex for those that may remember!) and next to the hifi housing shelf is a bureau with a drop down door that makes a table surface when opened. The problem is caused by this table/door being opened, and the effect it has is to dupe it into thinking there is a remote control request taking place (fast forward i think) this explains the bottom right light showing up.
If i block the remote sensor (in the naim logo i assume) then all is well. I heard a suggestion it is a light being redirected to it, but it happens with or without artificial light, in fact it happens in the complete dark!
Should i still take it back to dealer?
has anyone heard of this problem?
It is extremely weird! is it black magic?

That is completely weird.
have you tried removing all the remote controles from the room and turning off any other electonic equipment in the room, just in case one of these has gone bonkers.

no but the remote control needs to be pointing in the right direction. so if its well out of the way it should have the same effect as leaving the room right?

Does anyone think it could be my set up?
I have the nait5 on the shelf, the cd5 placed on top of this then a cd burner and radio all on top of that.. I haven't been able to decide/afford a rack yet...

Seconding Mr Greeny... That's just odd!
Forgive my earlier outburst. After 3 years studying electronics at UMIST I am faced with the daunting task of assuring myself that the rest of the country isn't as stupid as either its undergraduates or staff.
I mean! A person doing a degree in electronics should really know what the word "arbitrary" means.
And here's a quote from a lecturer...
L: "Who are pensioned aimed at...?"
Students various stupid responses here... " "
L: "No, pensions are aimed at retired people..."
So I don't have to worry about saving for my pension for another 40 years then
Great!
In a later lecture I also got this...
L: "Use a rubber so that you don't make a mistake"
Now forgiven for a slight Bushy misquote on the second one, the first is unforgivable!
That would explain my easy loss of temper!
Your solution is easy... get rid of the bureau!
