The Beatles 2009 Remasters

Posted by: pcstockton on 02 September 2009

I am surprised there is not yet a thread on this. Isn't everyone excited? The currently available CDs are utter crap. In fact the first transfer I did was my German DMM (on White Vinyl) of "The Beatles" (White Album).

A buddy of mine (who pre-ordered the limited 10K, Mono Box Set), sent me the following info:

The re-mastering process commenced with an extensive period conducting tests before finally copying the analogue master tapes into the digital medium. When this was completed, the transfer was achieved using a Pro Tools workstation operating at 24 bit 192 kHz resolution via a Prism A-D converter. Transferring was a lengthy procedure done a track at a time. Although EMI tape does not suffer the oxide loss associated with some later analogue tapes, there was nevertheless a slight build up of dust, which was removed from the tape machine heads between each title.

From the onset, considerable thought was given to what audio restorative processes were going to be allowed. It was agreed that electrical clicks, microphone vocal pops, excessive sibilance and bad edits should be improved where possible, so long as it didn't impact on the original integrity of the songs.

In addition, de-noising technology, which is often associated with re-mastering, was to be used, but subtly and sparingly. Eventually, less than five of the 525 minutes of Beatles music was subjected to this process. Finally, as is common with today's music, overall limiting - to increase the volume level of the CD - has been used, but on the stereo versions only. However, it was unanimously agreed that because of the importance of The Beatles' music, limiting would be used moderately, so as to retain the original dynamics of the recordings.

When all of the albums had been transferred, each song was then listened to several times to locate any of the agreed imperfections. These were then dressed by Guy Massey, working with Audio Restoration engineer Simon Gibson.

Mastering could now take place, once the earliest vinyl pressings, along with the existing CDs, were loaded into Pro Tools, thus allowing comparisons to be made with the original master tapes during the equalization process. When an album had been completed, it was auditioned the next day in studio three - a room familiar to the engineers, as all of the recent Beatles mixing projects had taken place in there - and any further alteration of EQ could be addressed back in the mastering room. Following the initial satisfaction of Guy and Steve, Allan Rouse and Mike Heatley then checked each new re-master in yet another location and offered any further suggestions. This continued until all 13 albums were completed to the team's satisfaction.

-Patrick

PS - The new remasters were heard by Dr. Ebbetts and is now officially retiring, for what that is worth. He stated his finest vinyl transfers of the MFSL vinyl then the Blue Box Remasters, cannot come close to how amazing these new remasters are.

cant wait!!!!

AOL That says it all!
This takes some beating!

Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all the words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you

She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her when she said her love is dead
You think she needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone
She doesn't need him

Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be time when all the things she said will fill your head
You won't forget her

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

They had some really magical music and words, I was always impressed with their alternative takes on the traditional lvoe songs or something new. I know Paul isn't a favorite, but I always enjoyed his English Music Hall cartoonish pieces. Who else can write a song about a mass murderer on trial and make you laugh? Silverhammer strikes again. I also like lots of the songs on side 3 and 4 of white album, really wonderful stuff that doesn't get played as much.

I have to find the DVD of the BBC production of The Singing Detective, I didn't get to see all of them and just laughed my head off on seeing it first time.

What album were they on?
Posted on: 24 September 2009 by Chief Chirpa
Ha ha. They're from the fifth side of the redux version of the White Album. I only know Cannonball Hands (The Tomato Parade) - that's another one of the daft ones they let Ringo sing.

Having no idea what they sound like as I haven't got Real Player installed, out of curiosity, I googled a couple of the songs - it's the wrong link, of course!! It's a band called He Is Legend's "Suck Out the Poison".

Had me going.

Any list of best Beatles songs that omits "I've Got a Feeling" is incorrect... Big Grin

Does anyone know if the Vinyl reissues will be available in mono as well as stereo?
If so will the mono LP's have to be purchased as a box set or can they be purchased separately??

Cheers

I promised myself not to buy any more Beatles cd's. Then i read some of this thread. Tomorrow I will be a boxset the poorer.

But no doubt the cheerier! What was i thinking?

Mongo, you and me both, I have plastic bags of CDs and some albums to trade at Amoeba, I should just do it today.

Surprised noone on here (unless I've missed it and then I shall fall on my sword) has mentioned yet another edition of the Remasters.

All the stereo remasters are being issued on a USB stick in 24-bit 44.1kHz FLAC files on 7th December. When not in use the stick sits in a cute little apple as well! What more could you want?!

Any takers?

Hi Steeve. Of course they are!

I find that i'm unable to afford the box set so it's one at a time for me, although i suspect the mono's would have been better.

I decided to start with Help! because it has 13 top tunes on it. All except the god awful 'Dizzy miss lizzy'

Looking forward to blastimg it out after feeding time.

I'm a bit pissed at this. Not only has the Mono collection been produced in more than 10,000 copies they've now cut the price 10% on Amazon and introduced the higher quality USB version. I can't wait to download my copy from the net after they stiffed me on the Mono box set.

Steevo, seems i owe you an apology. Thought your 24 bit thing was a jest.

As to the remastered Help! bought yesterday it is, imo, much better than the original '87 sourced stuff. Sounds an altogether more accomplished mastering. But....

I find myself being a tiny bit dissapointed as i was expecting even more.

It seems i over believed the hype! Hate it when that happens.

Still buying the rest though 'cos they are a big improvement and a tenner a piece for a 5 inch slice of magnificence is well worth it.

Mudwolf, i think you should just get 'em.

Actually, the stereo Help! is the one album that has not been remastered. It still uses the digital master assembled by George Martin in 1986 (albeit perhaps with a couple of EQ tweaks). Hence you're hearing a Sony PCM1610 in all its glory. Sorry!
Posted on: 12 November 2009 by mongo
Then all power to the Sony PCM1610 say I!

Still have the Help! cd bought in the mid 90's and my new one is smoother and less lefty righty. Does this mean i can expect better of the others?

Also, to further advertise my ignorance, what is a Sony PCM1610?

The stereo Help! is remastered. The George Martin stereo master is included on the new Mono version of Help!

Thanks for that natnc. Thought my ears might have gone daft.

Nope. Wrong way around - at least in Europe. The original 1965 stereo mixes are extras in the mono box (strange logic, but true).

As to the EQ, George Martin 'modernised' the sound of the original CDs by boosting the treble etc, I guess that some of this has been reversed. The digital reverb is still there though...

I would expect the differences to be greater on the other CDs, especially those that were originally pretty bad - i.e Revolver. Can't say for certain though, although I had a few of the original CDs I replaced them with pre-digital LPs which were far better.

Cheers
