hicap 2

Posted by: oakey on 29 February 2004

hi
ive just bought a second hand hicap 2 to add on to my nac 112,i orginally had the flatcap 2 on it but will be getting rid of that as i have a cdx2 coming next week to replace my cd5 but my question is,when i added the hicap i immediately noticed more detail but as time went on i noticed the sound stage basically disapeared and the sound was very harsh,it sounded rubbish, continous listening this improved but went back to sounding very flat again,i thought it would be properly run in as i asked the guy i bought it off and he said he had only used it for about six weeks but not continously, does this mean it might not be run in properly yet or im i just expecting to much out of it
thanks for any comments

Just make sure you've got it hooked up right, cables round the right way (tag at preamp not hicap) and the hicap is feeding the power amp.

If you experienced the hicap revealing a CD5/112 combo I would say based on a demo i had that the hicap is over-revealing the source. That should be cured with addition of the CDX2.
The flatcap2 is a more balanced choice for a 112/CD5, buit I still think you're going the right way.

Let me know what happens when you get your CDX2.
I think everything will come right.

BTW I tried a CD5 with a 202 preamp and had the same thing happen, stage collapsed and timing went out the door. Put the 112 back and it was all fine again.
Lesson: don't over-reveal your source component.

thanks joe90
hope the cdx2 will sort it then,as to your answer on the cables being the correct way ive got the tag on the pre amp but which way does it go on the power amp, doesnt show the tag on the power amp in the manual so i ive put the tag end on the hicap,is this correct

If it's oonly been used intermittantly for 6 weeks, I'd say it's not yet fully run in.
8 weeks switched on full time should be somewhere near fully run in IMHO.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Yes the tag between the hi and power should be at the hicap.
