Adrian Sherwood – The genius returns

Posted by: jcs_smith on 06 February 2007

There was a time when everything Adrian Sherwood touched would be guaranteed to be stunning. But over the last few years he lost it – his records were basically not very good. OK they were as good as things produced by other people but not up to his usual standard. Anyway I got his most recent album – Becoming a cliché – the other day. In truth I didn’t expect it t o be any good but I just bought it to add to the collection. It’s fortunate that I did because it’s a fabulous record. OK it’s not up to the standard of say Vacuum Pumping, Tackhead Tape Time or Revenge of the Underdog, but still it’s superb. It features Lee Scratch Perry, LSK, Little Roy, Samia Farah and a posthumous appearance by Bim Sherman. He’s definitely back on track.

Thanks for the tip. The only record of his I have is Never Trust A Hippy, which I really like. Are the others you mention better than that?

I see Amazon have a 2 CD version with dub mixes for only £1 more. I'll give it a go.

Big fan of Sherwood and Keith LeBlanc.

What was the name of the new disc and is On-U still in business?

I don't think it's producing new stuff. The new album is called Becoming a Cliche and it's on Real World records. There's also a limited edition 2 disk set available at the moment with additional dub mixes

And it's absolutely great.
