Rusty CDs

Posted by: Kev T on 23 October 2006

Hello All,

I wonder if any of you can help me. I have a number of CDs which have a pink bloom on them, which I believe is called "CD rust". The CDs concerned are mainly on the Polydor label and most of them are Jimi Hendrix CDs.
I seem to remember reading something about this some years ago and believe that the pressing company will replace any discs that display this "rust". Has anyone else experienced this phenomena and if so, did you manage to get a replacement disc?

Kev,

Sorry not come accross this personally. You sure it is not Purple Haze rather than pink bloom?

This is not really an answer to your question but if you have a computer and they are still playable I would suggest you make backup copies while you still can .. ideally make two copies of each on different brands of CD.

The smptoms you describe affected some of the very first CDs to be manufactured. Google "CD rot" for an explanation of the problem.

At one stage, manufacturers would exchange faulty discs, but I have no idea whether they still do now.

Incidentally, the current 'Experience Hendrix' remasterings of Jimi Hendrix's catalogue are very considerably better than the crappy masterings released at the dawn of the CD age so, one way or another, you owe it to yourself to hear the 'new' ones.

Hi Kev;

I had a right old battle with EMI to get this 1994 remaster of 'Atom Heart Mother' replaced.

It appeared to have corroded under the outer lacquer surface for no apparent reason. I have several other PF remasters from the same era, which still look perfect.

Good luck.

John.

Thanks for your responses guys. Copying the CDs might be possible with some of them James, but they actually begin to sound like a scratched piece of vinyl, some are unplayable and some have patches where the silver has disapeared.

Love the humour from Nicnaim.

I actually think that is great advice from James. Things that don't play, will still copy sometimes.

Then it is down to the good old Sale of Goods Act, isn't it?

I bought a CD that you can see straight through, surely that should be replacable. I don't care how old John's Floyd CD is, that looks like 'not fit for the purpose' to me. We should all move to the States and take a class action. One lawyer per every 150 head of population (?) perhaps not! Unless I'm missing something that means that 150 people take enough legal actions to keep one lawyer afloat?
