I don't wish to diminish the sorrow of his family and friends, but Mclaren was a scumbag scam merchant who tried to claim credit for other people's work and creativity.

As a manager he was an old-fashioned rip-off merchant (who despised the bands he managed) and an effete bourgeois full of pathetic little scams. If things got a bit out of his control - as they did after the Bill Grundy incident or during the Pistols' Jubilee boat trip - he'd get into a mad flap like some panicky old woman.

He never had the guts or decency to admit what his real role in punk (ie marginal) was.

That said, RIP. It's never good when someone dies.

Sad for any death, but he was always a con man to me. Produced shit music, can't comment about his clothes. Bollocks sums it up really.

RIP Malcolm.

The passing of a hero.

Who now will fill the pompous with terror, outrage the establishment and stamp on the dead hand of complacent English conformity?

So long, Malcolm.

Give 'em hell. Razz *gobs*

Some fool on BBC radio this morning was comparing today's dreadful manufactured girls bands and the days when real music was around - punk!!!!

For those of a certain age punk = junk.
Posted on: 09 April 2010 by 151
he was a nasty piece of work by all accounts but then if not for him we wouldnt have had never mind the bollocks which was a breath of fresh air at the time, big up for that.

RIP Malcolm

Lo Big H,

For those of a certain (different) age, Punk = joy (and growing up)
A megablast of Pretty Vacant even now can inject a quick shot of youthful hormone straight to the brain and balls.

Top Class.

As for the man being a con artist?

Well as Munch points out, he was at least much less of of a sickening, saccharine vomit bucket than Cowell, Walsh, Waterman et al.

RIP.

Hardly a glowing endorsement, I have one more:-

One man's breath of fresh air is another's halitosis!

I quite like the Stranglers and some Clash from that era, but never thought of the Pistols as any more than a bunch of noisemakers.

Not an endorsement BigH, simply pointing out that there are more objectionable creatures than Malcolm M in the music business.

Had I been a teenager in the late sixties I no doubt would have been a prog/rock chap.

As it is the Stranglers, Jam, Sex Pistols, Damned, Banshees, Gen'X and such others as I've forgotten were my testosterone age companions.

Malcolm M was a part of all this. Hence my fond recollections.

Paul.

I'm with Mr BigH on this. Much as I tried to get into it, punk was just an 'orrible racket to me...

MM was at least honest in his dishonesty. He never claimed to be doing anything other than exploiting others. We knew he was screwing with us, and we didn't care. Contrast this with so-called "celebrities" like Winfrey who profits from an illusion of care and do-gooding. MM was a genius IMHO.

Malcolm McLaren made a good album called Paris, a kind of jazzy thing it was. I think I may put it on later in his honour. I wasnt a fan but hey 'buffalo girls go round the outside' is still etched in memory so he was connecting somewhere.

I agree with this. His the veracity of his falseness can hardly be questioned. He said 'I am screwing you and you know it' but if we knew it; then could he have been? Anyway RIP Malcolm.
