For me at about 13 it was the Beatles when my sister's boyfriend dropped Sgt. Peppers off as a present. She wasn't home but I got the OK from my other sister to listen to it. WOW! Sure opened up my ears. Been thrilled with it ever since, tho I took a break of 25 years before I bought it in vinyl again. Tho I do remember really liking Lady Madonna and that groovy piano backing, that perked my ears up too. Don't remember which was first.

In my youth I remember the sound of Sinatra echoing around the house and to me it just meant nothing at all. Then one fine morning I tuned in to a pirate station and couldn't believe what I heard at all. I started listening to some fine, fine music and my life was saved by "Folk Roots, New Routes" by Shirley Collins and Davy Graham. For the first time I was listening to something I really liked and realised that music could be something special. Then I started to listen to lots of Radio Caroline, where I could hear the Beatles, Kinks and Small Faces. Then I got some money for my birthday and bought Revolver (Beatles) and Get the Picture? (Pretty Things) and I've been collecting music ever since.
I know it may be the wrong thing to say, but I think in the sixties: music become something to listen to rather than something to dance to. There probably was a lot of good music around in 40s and 50s, but it just didn't get through to me.
The first group I ever saw was The Pink Floyd and I was astounded as it was completely different from what I expected - flashing lights and very long songs. I'm sure there were five in the group at the time (Dave Gilmour was definitely not in the group), but my main memory was watching Syd. I guess I was a bit disappointed that they didn't play Arnold Layne and See Emily Play, but it was an experience.
I used to go to lots of concerts - Tintern Abbey and Wimple Winch were among the best groups I saw.
Then I finally got to see Shirley Collins live at Chelmsford Corn Exchange and to this day it remains the most enjoyable concert I've ever been to. I've subsequently collected a copy of every Shirley Collins recording that I'm aware exits.
So I'd say that Shirley Collins is responsible for my love of music.
Apologies for the self indulgence

PS - My grandmother used to watch Crown Court and went out one day and bought the theme tune - hence my love of Leos Janacek.
