If I buy one of the current 80G or 160G Playstation 3 consols can it play Playstation 2 games .. I have looked for help on the internet but the reports are all very confusing ...

Thanks

Hi James, the answer I am fairly certain is No. The last PS3 that was backwards compatible with PS2 games is the 60GB version - which my son has.

If Wikipedia is to be believed the answer's no which I find very surprising. I'll check with my son who knows about these things.

Really it sounds absolutely right, the way to make you buy new versions of the games.

If you have a PS3 with just 2 USB ports and no memory card slot, it will not be backwards compatible, if you have 4 USB ports and a card slot, it is backwards compatible.

The compatibility was removed for cost reasons and affects all PS3's sold globally now.

Bit of a downer that, the backwards compatible PS3's go for quite considerable sums on ebay now I am led to believe.

According to my son the only backwards compatible PS3 is the 60 gb one which is discontinued in the UK.

Hi all

Just to confirm the comments here. Only the original 60gb model is backwards compatible with ps2 games. That was through software so some ps2 games worked and some didn't.

The later models also miss SACD playback. Ok whoopdee you might be thinking but I have an SACD multi-channel version of The War of the Worlds that sounds fantastic.

Thanks again to everyone who replied ...

It's a very bad deal from Sony. I don't think providing software [emulation] support for old games would be that expensive. In any case they could charge a bit extra for the compatible version of the box. Obviously they don't want people playing the old games.

We would prefer a singe box that could play both PS-2 and PS-3 since we have a fair number of PS-2 games and don't want too many boxes attached to the TV.

We already have a BluRay player so I think we will look at the Xbox as another possibility.

I never thought I would prefer Microsoft to Sony ...
