CDSII Display

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 25 March 2001

Can anyone honestly hear any difference with the CDSII display switched off "for improved sound quality".
I mean, do a test with the display covered with a bit of tape and toggle between on and off.
I can't hear any change.
Am I going deaf?

I've never been able to hear a difference with my CDX display on or off, BUT, I do find displays very distracting! So I do enjoy the music more with the display off.

With the CDS2 it does sound better with the display switched off, no doubt.
With the CDX, the effect is more subtle.
With my humble CD5 it makes no difference.
Note the hierarchy, I hope this offers some clarity, as does switching off the display with the CDS2 wink

I find with the CD5 I can detect when it's off about 90% of the time, but it's effect is subtle.

I do find myself subconciously turning the display off if I find it on, so at a deeper level it's effect may be more noticeable.

There was another thread on this subject recently, you could try a search for more info.

Andy.

CDX

Definite difference. But subtle.

Display off best
Track number - minor degredation
Track Time - definitly worse

There is a massive difference in sound when I turn the display off on my CDS1. The background gets much, much quieter and I can hear deeply into the room ambience. Tiny details like hearing the fountains and traffic from distant roads are allowed to emerge from the resulting inky-black silent background. The same effect can be gotten by turning off the display in the 52 or on the power amps.

Ron,

How do you do that? Do you have to disconnect the power or something in it's innards?

Many thanks, I'll listen harder.
My CDSI didn't have the display option.

Apologies to all that did not see the 'smiley-face' preface of my posting. What I meant was that the ONLY way to turn off the display on the CDS1 is to turn the power off.... which produces no sound at all- certainly a huge change as compared to having the unit powered up. When no sound comes out of the speakers I can then hear deeply into the room ambience and become aware of extraneous traffic noise etc.
Only a joke guys... not a revolutionary tip on CDS1-tweaking. April 1st is fast approaching.

I've previously not been able to detect any difference with display on or off with my CDS-II.

Having recently done some room tweeking I'm getting a much less muddled sound, and now I can hear a quite audible difference switching from time-counting to off mode - a bit less hash, a bit more depth and solidity.

cheers, Martin
