Annie Lennox - Bare
Posted by: Analogue on 28 December 2008
I received this cd as a gift, unfortunatley it tends to stick/skip at about 1minute in on each track, has anyone else had this problem?
I've changed pucks to no avail.
Happy New year all.

This rings a bell from the dim and distant past. Is it something to do with the firmware needing upgraded? Check here for further info.

Just an idea and a cheap one - try copying the disc onto a blank and see if that helps

I had a similar problem (not with that particular CD) recently and the CDS2 needed a PIC upgrade, to cure it.

Thank you all for your help - the problem seems to be, that this cd is thinner than normal.
It should be easiley corrected by putting a paper sticker on the label side, thus allowing the puck to grip it.

If you put a paper label on the CD, then I would only put it only over the area where the puck will cover it.
I have found in the past that CDs (well CDRs in my experience) warp slightly over time as the label ages, and discs with labels always eventually stopped playing. This was not due to CDR dye fading.
So CDs are going the way vinyl went in the 80s, the (major) record companies have found a way the save on them by making them thinner, and so less playable. Not surprised.

Please let us know how this turns out. I've had a few "thin" CDs (recessed round the spindle) but they've always refused to load, full stop. The only time I had this sort of failure was with my old 3.5 which came with the original PIC, and each track of a copy protected disc would jump or stick. Copying would always cure it, but the basic problem was with the CD player which needed its firmware updated.

Using a sticky label on the cd label, didn't cure the problem.
So i burned it to CDR and this seems to have worked,
If it was a PIC upgrade problem, shouldn't it come up with an ERROR message when the skipping occures?
No ERROR message is displayed on my cdp.
Thanks for your help and suggestions,

No it didn't display any sort of error.

No error was shown on my CDP but the PIC upgrade cured the problem. If it was reading the CD wrongly then maybe an "err" would show.

Have you checked your PIC type as described here?
