Minime,
Sounds like a spur. If it was part of the main ring-main,it would have two sets of wires connected to it.
I suspect that if you dig deeper, you will more than likely find that it will have been spurred off from the ring main( I found quite a few sockets in my own house wired in this way).
My house is in the uk and dates back to late 50's early 60's

Hi Frank,
Erm....Not really as if it's hanging off the ring main,it's still has access to all the other noise that will be generated from any other applience plugged into the ring.
If it was a proper standalone spur,it would lead from the back of the socket straight to the board itself such as a Cooker socket.
( ...you might be lucky, but taking into consideration most of the mains installs that I have seen...I suspect it will just be a socket spurred off the ring main).
regards
Chris

Minime,
If you're still reading this thread?
4 in 4 out is not a good situation especially as u were getting hum [which suggests incorrect earthing]. it would seem u have 2 spurs comming off the ring skt, only one is permitted.
I strongly urge you, especially if u own the property, to get a qualified electrician to check out and test your electrics - it's a matter of safety.

Hi
I think you are only ment to have a single gang socket spured off a twin gang which is on the ring. No twin gang sockets should be on a spur off the ring, only staight from the CU.

the first socket i had for my hi fi i changed from switched to un-switched.this is when i noticed 4 wires in each hole i did say 4 in 4 out which was wrong i am sorry for any confusion. the socket i am using now i have just changed from switched to unswitched this has only one wire in each hole hence my spur question. i replaced the socket because i had a sibilance problem and i could not track it down, i also bought 2 new plugs all the sockets are mk total cost £11.00. i am now playing my most sibilant album on cd and guess what i am a happy man definatly a reduction. i can only think that the previous socket was old,so after messing around with placement ic's and speaker cable i have at long last solved my problem.
