New Apple iTunes 10 Features
Posted by: Ballan on 02 September 2010
I just wanted to let Apple iTunes users know that I've been testing the new iTunes 10 today and have found some interesting features that will be handy for us music nuts.
1. Apple has changed the name of "AirTunes" to "AirPlay".
2. AirPlay allows the ability to adjust volume control for individual AirPort Express and Apple TV units.
3. AirPlay will allow (with the introduction of iOS 4.2 coming in November) the ability to stream content from iOS devices. This means that music and movies can be sent directly from an iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad to an Apple TV or AirPort Express.
4. List view has a cleaner look by grouping "album songs" together and not repeating "album name".
I have done some listening to see if there is any quality upgrade (or downgrade), and so far I can not tell any difference. I'm using Snow Leopard. If anyone else has any opinions, please let me know.

2 is 1, and thats it, shame they have not allowed you to control other itunes on the network, would be a big advantage.
3 is going to appeal to some kids but no one else. Chances are if its on your ipod its on your network already, so will only be of use in those ultra unlikely occasions of a friend coming round your place to show you the latest hollywood movie.
4 The new look of itunes seems nice, but the whole OSX is looking a bit 2006 now, itunes does little to fix that. Still looks better than the grubby shit brown of ubuntu

Could not get a flac format to work, how did you achieve this?

Can you confirm how you got this to work? Are you using any type of "transcoder"?

He cant. It doesn't play FLACs. Stop wasting time dreaming about it.
The sad thing is.... if it did, I would consider a mini for my hifi 'puter.

That's what I thought. If Apple started supporting FLAC....wait....a pig just flew by the window....

But it is significant that Apple are now licencing third parties to use Airplay in their products; B&W, JBL and Denon are the first. Lots of people will be happy enough streaming from iTunes to their hifi; I wonder if Naims relationship with Apple includes the Airplay stuff? Has to be better than plugging your iPhone into a DAC with a USB lead!

If it has to encode / decode via Apple Lossless over the network, it might sound worse. Who knows?

Since there would be no loss of information in the digital domain, one would hope the engineering would be sufficiently competent for there to be no difference in the perceived sound.
Or are you suggesting that encoding a file to Apple lossless and back to WAV makes it sound different to the original WAV?

A cheap streamer option is the soon to be released new AppleTV. $99 (or £99 in the UK
)

You know what - you might be right, just checking it out and assuming it sounds goo it would make a fab streamer!

I've got an AppleTV at present using the optical into the nDAC. It isn't as good as the CD5XT into the DAC. I wonder if the newer ATV would be an improvement.
