Pellets and other 'alternative' forms of energy.

Hi,
Does anyone have any experience of swapping to pellets or (more interesting from my point of view) some form of heat pump? This has cropped up a couple of times in conversation with friends/family. What do such systems cost, what tax breaks or grants are available, etc. My understanding is that they are relatively uncommon for domestic use, and that prices are sufficiently hight that it is difficult to justify on a simple payback basis.

Both pellet fired boilers and heat pumps are reltively common over here in Sweden. The last appartment we lived in (One of nine in a converted school) got most of its thermal energy from a heat pump. OK, the instalation involved nine boreholes each 75m + deep, and a 2m x 1m x 0.8m size heat exchanger, but it did keep everyone cosy with outside temperatures of -15C - -20C before additional energy input was required. Since this was a 'commercial' sized instalation (Cost ca £35K, heating 9 volumous appartments, ...) and in Sweden, it is difficult to translate this into a UK domestic situation.

Also, any view or speculation as to where we are heading as far as energy costs, renewable energy sources, taxation, etc.?

David,

There is a large 30 odd page supplement in the September edition of Housebuilding and Renovation magazine which may well answer some of your questions www.homebuilding.co.uk/This.Issue.asp?Action=View&ID=57%5DGreen

I have a copy of this on order because I am very interested in this area. My Dad has an advance copy because he receives it by subscription, which I have had a brief look at. From what I have seen it covers quite a lot of options, wind solar, heat pumps, insulation, photo electric etc etc, with estimated costs and payback predictions.

I would also be very interested in the personal experience of forum members in this area as it forms part of my studies.

Regards

David, David,

I have just installed a pellet wood fire in my home this year - strangely enough just before winter...

Conclusion, damm good.

The reasoning behind it all was that the wires in concrete that was installed was costing $250 to $300 per month to run, and barely kept the house comfortable. The pellet fire has used $300 of fuel all winter, and this inckludes having it run all night over the colder months...

I did consider a proper log burner, but lack of trees on my property, along with a price hike this winter swayed me to the pellet fire.

The heat pump was abandoned on price. Having a large lounge - 4.5 * 9 m connected to a 3*9m dining/kithen by a 4m walk through meant the Heat pump to warm the room would be around $12000. Pellet fire was $4100 installed.

After living through the winter, I believe I made the right choice. The pellet fire has it over the real wood burner in the fact you can push a button, and the room is warm is 10-15 minutes. A bonus in the morning or when you arrive home late in the evening. To me, this convenience factor is HUGE. All I need to do now is to work out HOW to build a timer switch. The fire I have has the capabilities, but not the control panel.

Please feel free to ask any further questions.
Cheers
Pete
