sad news... ;-)

Hi!

I am afraid I am cured from upgraditis, I can't find any symptoms any more...

Except that I need to have my s/h Koetsu Onyx serviced and installed. Also dedicated spurs and cable dressing should be done, but this will wait until I move to a new appartement - at that time I will also buy some racks, maybe fraim...? Ah, and one day in the multichannel-future I may like to re-activate my SBLs and abuse them as rear-speakers...?!?!

So, do you have any ideas how to optimize my system without spending too much money? I am not going to upgrade existing boxes as I don't wand to start with the new-series gear...

You know: my Naim sounds so wunderful, I am just happy and can easily live with it as it is!

Nick!!! That's what I am doing right at the moment. Very unique story:

I have never searched for a violin since I am allowed to play on a violin which is in private possession. Also a violin of the kind I would like to have is much too expensive. A Stradivari is worth 3~5 million USD...

But on my last trip to USA I accidently found a violin, it's a marvellous 250-years-old Landolfi. I don't know why, but the owner sells it for less than 40% of the current value... The violin is now with me, I will have it serviced, and I think I am going to buy it. I never thought that I would have such great luck! This kind of storys do not happen these days any more... Also I am going to upgrade my bow, I found a F. Pecatte and a Sartory in perfect condition!

And after all I can keep the violin I play until now, which is a really nice Gand...

What about the XPS2 - you know it makes sense Wink
Posted on: 14 May 2003 by jpk73
I already asked about the XPS2, but it's not possible to have it in the olive box... And if I introduce the new-series gear I am sure upgraditis would cause incurable wounds to my monetary resources for the rest of my life!

But what about the new burndys? Are they a significant upgrade over my existing black ones?

Jun,

Don't take any notice of these guys. Especially Tom. They are cyberspace stooge bots planted by Naim to drum up sales of the new product. Come on Naim, admit it, ALVES stands for "Automated Live Virtual Electronics SubliminalAdvertiser".

The olive box thing is easy. Just take the new box, cover it in Ados and roll it in grit. After it has dried out prime with Zinser "bullseye 123" and then apply two liberal coats of "Hindenburg green" (remember to keep a "wet edge" if painting with a brush). To finish, nail a piece of glad wrap to the front and I guarantee that even your mum wont be able to tell the difference (provided she is completely blind).

Alternatively get all your old innards put into the new look boxes then upgrading won't be so hard.

I am glad that upgrading is so hard Wink

Jun, when will we hear you play Paganini's "cannone"?

I thought it was a wonderful story how Regina Carter was allowed not only to perform with it, but record an album.

Roll Eyes

I once played on Kreislers del Gesu which was not played for almost 50 years. It made me play totally different and I could feel the spirit of Kreisler in the sound of that wonderful violin... It was really an experience!

Since there is no album with me Big Grin, please visit my website under www.jpk.at, where you can listen to a short recording, played on a 20th century violin. Let me know if you like it!!

Nice. Great double-stops. The violin sounds pretty good to me - why don't you stop lusting after the fiddle upgrade and spend your money on something nice and new instead ?

Well, think, Tom: Jun is on his way of getting a permanent place in the world's best symphony orchestra (with the best string section in the world).

I think it would make sense to put his fiddle first.

In fact the remarkable thing is he cares about having a good music reproduction sistem as well.

it is strange how so few musicians are interested in listening to music.

Many colleagues have great hi-fi systems (and sistems): One has CD12/?/2*Klimax/LP12, another has LP12/?/Rogers LS. Also I helped 3 people with Naim: I sold my "old" gear to a friend who has now 92/2*90/IXO/Flat/Credos, and another one has CD3.5/Flat/Nait3/Credos. A couple of weeks ago I sent another collegue to the Naim dealer and he bought CD5/Flat/Nait5/Kef Q5...

But many people just don't know how much fun it could be, and when they visit me they are always completely "scared"...! BTW, many of them don't care about their violins, too... But those who do are interested in a good music reproduction sistem as well...

Herman, I have always the excuse that I don't own a car, so I can have an expensive hi-fi...! - Maybe later I will get a driver licence and by a decent 548tdi Wink

But you surely can't be talking about people in the VPO and Opera. I recall Bernstein telling a story about one VPO horn player who owned, I believe, 22 different horns, to go with different kinds of music.

BTW, I'm wondering, so may I ask, are you playing in the VPO fulltime, or do you still have some maturing to do in Opera orchestra? Were you sitting in on the new Rattle Beethoven, for instance, and what was it like?

are you playing in the VPO fulltime, or do you still have some maturing to do in Opera orchestra?

Every musician plays from the beginning in both orchestras, which means that it's in fact only one orchestra just with 2 names (and 2 jobs!): vpo = self organized; vienna state opera orchestra = engaged by the opera. New members play in the opera and in the vpo exactly the same like old members, also they earn all the same. After playing for three years with the opera orchestra and with the vpo the aspiring musician can get membership in the Association of the Vienna Philharmonic. Befor that he/she is not allowed to call himself/herself a "Philharmoniker"...

I didn't play the new Rattle Beethoven complete recording, but I played for example the Rattle with Beethoven 5 and Chung / Brahms violin concerto. The reason is: when vpo plays concerts, the rest of the crew has to play opera...!
