HDX and Internet
Posted by: gmischol on 25 January 2010
So, since 4 days I'm a proud owner of a HDX. At the moment it is at my office, so I can feed it with all the CD's. But I have a problem. In my office-network it works (I can find it with the DTC) but whenever I insert a CD for ripping it tries to access the online-databases to look up the information for the CD but this does not seem to work and it switches to the lokal FreeDB, where many of the CD's are not found, especially not the album artwork. So it is in the network but internet-access doesn't seem to work. The network is about 8 pcs on a ethernet-switch connected to a router. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Gaudenz,
Congratulations with your HDX. It's a fabulous machine and I have not regretted it for a moment. Regarding your question: unfortunately, I'm not so good concerning networks. However it is easy to check the AMG database at
www.allmusic.com and see if the requested cover art is available or not. I've got several - maybe not so common - CD's with which the HDX presented no cover art simply because there isn't any available!
Furthermore, could it be that the AMG database wasn't available during the time of ripping? Using the DTC, right-click on a CD with missing cover art and select the option "CD Db lookup". In my case several missing covers turned up eventually...
Hope this helps, within a couple of weeks the new software for the HDX should be released. This adds the possibility to add cover art manually...

Michel

Hi Michel
thanks for your advice. I checked on allmusic.com and all of the albums I tried to rip are available. So it really is a problem of the HDX to go on to the internet and find it on AMG or FreeDB. As I said, I can access the HDX with the DTC, and under tools in the DTC I can find "Internet available=true". I can also see the HDX in the network on my Mac (but of course can not access it). I presume this is not a problem of the HDX itself but more some trouble on the network. Maybe some other network-crack knows how to solve this problem. As long as I can't solve it, it doesn't make sense to continue ripping.

Sounds to me the network settings for the HDX are not set correctly and the DNS settings need to be set. Ring your dealer.
Chris.

Is your office on a corporate network? Might be some sort of filter/firewall issue blocking some specific sites. Just a thought.

Problem solved
What did I do. Took the HDX home and integrated it in the network here. Works from the beginning without a problem. So it has to do with the network at the office. Thanks everybody for your help.

Hi Gaudenz,
Happy for you that everything is okay now.
BTW: It's still possible to try adding the missing cover art as I've described above!

Any ideas on this one? Purchased Phantomb Limb(special edition) on CD. The AMG site says it is on there but it will not find it when I use db lookup feature. Definately connected correctly because other lookups are retrieving missing artwork etc.

I asked about his a while back and got
this answer from Simon Drake. Amusing that Naim's hardware can't find a Naim label disk
Until you get the new firmware, you'll have to edit the tracks manually in the DTC
