NBL Shipping problems - Help

Posted by: John on 09 January 2003

My NBLs arrived yesterday and after unpacking them I noticed some problems.

The piece of wood that screws into the back of the speaker that is used to brace the tongue with the upper transit bolts was pulled/ripped out during shipping. The speakers must have been jolted in the transit. After reading through the instructions I repositioned the speaker enclosure more forward and the enclosure still has a bounce similar to the CDS1 transport suspension so I assume it's OK. How would I know if there is a problem?

The center knob for one of the speakers at the base of the speaker looks like it came off in shipping. It looks like the knob just needs to be put back on. How do I get access to the speaker behind the grill? Do I have to access it from the bottom of the speaker?

The midrange driver has some plastic that goes into the cut groove that circles this speaker. The plastic is pushed in on some places. Is this normal or should I be refitting plastic back into the groove? If so how would I do it?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi John,

I'd contact my dealer or national distributor about this immediately.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Hi john,
for the top enclosure, if it bounces like a CDS transport, that's ok. The problem with the piece of wood at the back will be when you will move them, as i understand, you can no longer screw the top enclosure.
Which piece is broken, the top or the bottom one? it should be the top one, it is fixed to the rear panel by 4 screws, after 2 or 3 years these screws become loose and if you tight the transit bolts, during the transport ...it breakes. The shipper should have tightened these screws before securing the enclosure.
Naim can surely provide you new pieces of wood and the screws, or you can do them, or make them done, they are quite simple.

For your other problem, you can pull the top of the grills, it is just snapped in. BUT you can not remove them, the plinth is in you way. Pulling the top will let you see the driver. If the phase plug (the black cylinder at the center of the driver's cone) has moved and touch the voice coil, dont use the speaker, you will burn your driver.
To remove the grill, you have to remove the plinth first, and to do this, you have to lay the NBL on its side. DON'T DO THIS BEFORE YOU CAN SECURE THE TOP ENCLOSURE.
You will have to solve the problem on the top before solving the bottom one if they are both on the same speaker.
Ask help from Naim directly, as nobody knows the NBL better than them. If you can send them pictures, it will be better.

Question for Naim: is the phase plug glued, soldered or does it stays magnetically?

Richard please answer, i need to know to help John.

Thank Manu, I will send an e-mail to Naim. The top piece of wood pulled/ripped out of the speaker at the back. The piece of wood is in perfect condition but the wood at the back of the speaker won't hold the 4 screws securely.

I did however manage to lock it again and it was strong enough for putting the speaker down (for my second problem) carefully but I wouldn't want to move it far in this condition. I have asked Naim if I should be using longer screws now. The original screws are so short it is no surprise it pulled out of the back of the speaker.

The base speaker centre cone just slid on a white plastic stem. I will wait for Naim to confirm before I play them again.

So far they are stunning! Much more natural than the SBL and they bring out a wider range of expression.

Thanks again Manu!

Hi John,

we got your e-mail but for some reason our reply keeps bouncing back. Where are you located?

I am not suggesting you use them yet, but I had the end of a phase plug come out once.

After seeking advice from naim it turns out the split type phase plugs are not held together with a hell of a lot, the purpose of the bit that has fallen off is to draw heat from the other section. I simply plugged it back in, just make sure the whole assembly is not bent or you have problems.

Of course wait for confirmation
