Vinyl in New York?

Posted by: FangfossFlyer on 02 March 2003

I am going over to New York in the near future.

Can anyone suggest any good LP stores in NY?(rock etc. from the 60's onwards).

Stayed there a couple of years ago and there's a fantastic LP shop on a corner near here - will post full details later.

Academy also has a jazz & pop LP shop. I think it's on 11th in the East village.

Footlight Records 113 E. 12th St. is also good for jazz and especially soundtracks and show tunes.

On Sundays, try the flea market at Columbus and 76th Street. There is a stand inside and a stand outside. The flea market opens at 10 am. I can say no more lest the NY record mafia revoke my vinyl privileges.

There's also a flea market in Chelsea on Sixth Avenue in the 20s.

Academy is the one at Time's Square, right?
If so, Academy's shop is way way WAAAAAAAY overpriced. They think because it is old, it's worth a ton of money.

When in NY, I like Footlight records and the Jazz Record Center. JRC is kinda expensive, but the quality control is the best I have seen. And the selection is great. Expect to pay a 15-25% premium at JRC. This is not too much to pay given the quality control and the selection.

At Academy, on the other hand, expect to pay a 100% to 200% premium on sub-par goods.

I can't stand most of the small record shops in the Village (of which there seems to be hundreds) because, more often than not, the records are packed into the bins so tightly that you can't flip through them. You'd have to remove 12 inches from each bin just to see what is in there. Also, many are overpriced (and undergood) and no effort to grade the records is made in any legitimate fashion.

Just my opinion.

I may be wrong about the name of the shop at Times Square. The shop I am thinking about has all kinds of old music memerobilia. They also have a record shop. It blows.

May not be called Academy though.

Thanks so far.....keep them coming....

I basicaly collect vinyl which you could generaly call rock with a wide range from the likes of Hendix, Dylan, Led Zep, Byrds, Velvet Underground (of which I have most) through reggae, punk, and into 8o's and 90's...oh not forgetting John Martyn, Incredible String band, Bowie...the list goes on..and how could I forget ...Neil Young esp. with Crazy Horse...and more recently Red Hot Chilli Pepers, Wilco, Bjork, Massive Attack,Nickelback, and that reminds me Bryan Ferry, Robert Plant, Soft machine, Tim Rose, Richard Thompson, Dave Crosby....

Judd,

You've got it wrong about Academy. They know what stuff is worth, so you are unlikely to find gems for peanuts, but they are turnover based and price below everyone else--at least in heavy traffic urban areas. For classical, they are on 18th just west of 5th, and for jazz (exp), soul, rock they are on E11th, around the corner from the Strand bookstore. It's true, you will pay much less in the boonies (I love trips to Boston, Providence, and Detroit), but in town, Academy is the only place with consistently fair prices. The classical (not my bag) is very fairly priced, and may still be 50% off.

Are you thinking of the Colony at 49th and 7th (actually in the Brill Building)? They did have outrageous prices (including charging $20 for $13 list OJC cds), though I snagged some good stuff off them once when they marked down most of their stuff to $3 or less. I'm not sure they've got any more vinyl, but it's been two years since I've gone (and I'm four blocks away every work day).

You can try Rocks in Your Head on Prince St.--go on Saturday and say hi to Lucy, most other days you can greet Vito of the Rapture. Also Subterranean (which is better for older stuff, though overpriced in general), just around the corner from the Christopher St. 1/9. Footlights is a nice store but geared to jazz and show tunes. Academy is definitely worth it. Mercer St. books on Mercer St. (duh) across from NYU has a small but decent selection, and academic books too (duh). You might also like Downtown Music Gallery (not too much rock, just moved, but fair pricing and the owner is a gem who's taping avant-garde jazz almost every night it seems). Housing Works thrift store gets good notices but I've never gone. Etherea on Ave. A has a nice little selection. Wowsville on 2nd Ave has a lot of punk/garage type stuff. Other Music has a lot of interesting stuff--everything on the wall is overpriced, but try and find it. Kim's (St. Marks) is kinda lame but their knowledge/pricing is inconsistent enough to come up with good bargains from time to time--but you just missed a 20% off sale so their kinda picked over at the moment.

I'll say again, for foreigners NY may be pretty good, but I'll take Boston or SF for price and selection.

It's been a while, but some of the used BOOK stores from 22nd and 18th. streets (between 5th. & 6th. avenues) have some great old stuff for not a lot of $$$. Otherwise, like the others before me have said... Greenwich Village is good.

Happy Hunting! Wink
