The first few digits give an indication of the year of manufacture (which can be found on the main site) without revealing the whole serial number to all and sundry.

Its a bit like just showing the last four digits of your credit card number.

i understand that seagull . but what is there to hide???

Serial numbers can be hijacked by the ungodly to help them legitimise sales of dodgy equipment. It is therefore considered to be wiser to reveal the full serial number only to genuine persons who have a reason to want it i.e. potential buyers.

There are occaisional scams on epay etc where people have used serial numbers gleaned from genuine adverts.
