If you are buying second hand, look in next months Hi-Fi World and you might see an advert for a second hand CDI for well under £1000.

I've had a CDI, CD2, CDX, XPS, CDS2.

I also have a CD5 in the number two system with a Flatcap 2 powering it and a 32.5 (160 into Saras).

Don't overlook a new CD5 (currently £1,125). It has an upgradeabilty option in a Flatcap 2 or a Hicap and sounds different to the old generation players.

F.W.I.W. my local dealer has sold two CD5's with Hicaps in prefence to a bare CDX. It's a different sound; so get your ears over to a good dealer.

CD3.5 and Hicap.

I've heard a system comprising of CD3.5, 72/Hi/250, Saras and to be honest it had problems (sharp treble, bass bloom) so I'd demo carefully before you buy. In the same system a less aggressive player (an old Micromega) sounded a lot better to me.

The CD3 at 650 is well overpriced.

I sold mine for 320 last year.

And they do have their problems!!!

It's a shame really - I have an old Micromega player (Leader II) which is a very close match to the CD3.5. The build quality is a bit dubious, mine won't always read that a CD is loaded - when it does though it still sounds good.

I will be looking at anew CDP soon, I was tempted by a Nordost Red Dawn I/C which made my Arcam sound a hell of a lot better, but for similar money I could get a Naim CDp anyway, I asked something similar a while back and it was basically decided that the upgradeability of the CD3.5 and the slightly better sound meant it was a better purchase...

I did however ask about a CDi and although sonically it is a lot better I decided my Nait 3R would be outclassed plus it was also mentioned that there are no longer parts available for the CDi as CDS owners have had them reserved...

Can anyone confirm, as I am in a position to buy now....

Is a CDi too good for my Nait, bearing in mind I do intend to upgrade as and when, and are parts still available should something go wrong..

System currently is Nait 3R, Arcam Alpha 7SE and Dynaudio Audience 40's.

Greetings one and all.

I took the plunge for the £700 CDI and have not stopped grinning since I got it home three days ago. Sonny Rollins through a 72/140 and old Rega Ela's is just the business.

I had listened to the CD5 and it had sounded 'pretty good' via 102/180 and B&W speakers and dreadful via 92/90 and new rega Ela's (any idea where it went wrong - sounded like the system was in the next room - even the guy in the shop admitted as much).

I am well pleased with the CDi for the money, and think the people asking £600-700 for CD3/3.5 are being a bit optimistic.

Now, what should i replace the old sound organisation table with... wink

An LP12 is not too good for a Nait - and any source-first argument will support same. The question to ask is: "will I love the CDI for its sound?" - if it's better, it's better. Simple! HTH.

No source is to good for the nait! You don't say what CDP you have if at all.

The CDi represented a significant upgrade from my CD3.

Yes I did, I said I have an Arcam Alpha 7SE....

But my question has been sort of answered, what about the possibilty of expensive problems in the future due to lack of part availability?

Cheers guys

In reply to Duncan's comment about the CD5/92/90.3 combo at the dealer sounding poorly. I have a 92/90.3 to which I recently added a CD5/flatcap (replacing an AMC CD6). I'm really quite pleased with the improvement, although still deciding if I prefer the FC with the 92 or the CD5. I'm driving Vienna Acoustic Bachs, and the sound is quite upfront and realistic, as opposed to sounding as if in the next room. On the other hand, I found a used 3.5 to sound much less refined, so I opted to spend a little more on the new CD5 (only 30% more than a used 3.5 in the US).

Ronnie,

I will say this player will be one of the legends of naim, I agree whith the comments above and given your lp12 as well as a source you will enjoy your system with this machine too. It was actually created at its time almost parallel to the cds specifications but integrated....

Well it is not produced any more, but that is life...hmm!

I still have it, and here some more comments

The second hand market gives you good opportunities to buy naim stuff but you can rarely have a dem of the product unless you are very lucky or live near to the opportunity, if you know what i mean....

best regards

naimly yours

Thanking all for replies to my question about second hand Naim cd player, it seems the general feel is for a CD1 but I am a bit worried about future repairs to the cd player and if anyone can repair the CD1 in the future or do you just bin it. Seems a waste if it cant be repaired, Any thoughts or suggestions

I just purchased a cd2 ($1500.U.S.), quite a bit cheaper than a cdx and every bit as good...
