Polish J***?

Posted by: droodzilla on 31 May 2008

An obscure request, I know, but any recommendations?

There's Tomasz Stanko, of course, and the Marcin Wasileski Trio - both covered by ECM. But I suspect Poland has a thriving jazz scene, much of which is not visible from the UK (or elsewhwere).

I ask this, having been mightily impressed by the Polish musicians on the new Bennie Maupin CD - especially pianist, Michal Tokaj.

Other European jazz is relatively easy to (begin to) track down - France has label Bleu, Germany has ACT/ECM, Italy has CamJazz, but I don't know of a Polish equivalent.

Any ideas?

Buy the album Between Us and the Light by Mozdzer/Danielsson/Fresco. Wonderful, intelligent piano jazz trio - Polish E.S.T. They also have a new live album out and another good album called The Time. I bought my copies online from a polish CD store. (I know Danielsson is Danish but this album was only released in Poland)

A Polish Jazz Classic is Astigmatic by Krzysztof Komeda Quintet.

Concurr in the Between Us and Light CD by the Mozdzer trio--picked it up while in Poland awhile back and enjoy it very much(very unusual and interesting drummer in the trio in particular). Also there is a fine duo recording by Mozdzer and Danielsson released on ACT I believe. I'd like to hear the new live CD by the trio and wonder where I could pick it up, along with Time, their first CD. Mozdzer is superb pianist--his Chopin impressions CD on Opus 111 is a favorite.

I borrowed the Mezdzer/Daniellson CD (on ACT Records, as you say) from the record library and really liked it - thanks for the reminder. I'd certainly be very interested to hear what Mezdzer does with Chopin.

Mock anguish - why is there so much great music out there? This is gonna cost me a fortune!

Cheers
