Dear Basil,

Why does the BBC do this! Surely it would be better to have a Bach series over a whole year! I think the ideas at radio Three are going off the rails! But at least one may be able to select things from it, but Christams is usually a bad time, what with familly stuff..

Od Dear, another missed oportunity!

Personally I thought the Beethoven one was a big success and, so long as they don't do this sort of thing more than once or twice a year I really can't see a problem.

Dear Tam,

The problem for me and no doubt others, if not yourself, is that most people could not possibly take in that much of Bach's music in so short a spell, and will thus miss many great things through overload. If there were a weekly programme that proceeded through the "complete Bach" then no doubt people would tune in regularly and listen to far more of it and miss far less really tremendous music, which may be less know...

That is the problem as I see it. One would not eat all the tomatoes normally consumed in a year in a week without some horrid side-effects, I suspect!

I don't disagree with that. I'm quite sure I didn't take in all of the Beethoven (and I know his work far better). However, I don't think the point is that you take in all of it. What I liked about when they did the Beethoven was that I kept tuning in and hearing the most fascinating things, I'm sure there are plenty of others that I missed. But, that doesn't bother me.

I'm not sure the analogy to food quite holds either. R3 is far from being the only thing I listen to. I mix it with a whole range of other things. Should Bach become too much for me, I'll just fire up my cd player.

I also think, it brings people to classical music who might not otherwise be drawn in (e.g. the success of the symphonies downloads). I think it raises interest in a way that a weekly survey of Bach never could. And, as I say, as long as they only do it once or twice year I've no complaints. Doubtless, given it's his anniversary, Mozart will be next.

I've also very much enjoyed their smaller scale themed weeks (such as the Bernstein week, or the excellent Cole Porter week - which had the R3 message board screaming bloody murder -, and doubtless the forthcoming mackerras week)

regards,

Tam
