SpeakersCable length and bi-wiring

Posted by: Reto D on 29 April 2002

Hi,

What do you think about cable length? As short as
possible or as long as possible in order to get
the best possible quality of sound.

As far as I know Naim's not fond of bi-wiring. What do you/did you experience with bi-wiring. Is
it worth to pay double price? I'm thinking of
Chord Odysee No. 4.

Thanks and have a nice day!

In general, Naim do not recommend bi-wiring, while some other manufacturers do. Personally I have heard bi-wiring giving better results (in non-Naim systems). In the end, you will have to let your ears be your guide.
Cable length: Naim recommend a minimum speaker cable length (3 or 3.5 m I think, correct me if I'm wrong). Except for some older Exposure amps I know of no other brands where this is an issue.

Best,

Reto:

You should be using NACA5 cable only with a minimum length of 3.5 meters. The ProAc's will probably sound better with a shorter cable rather than a long one, mostly becasue of the soft dome tweeter.

The shorter cables produce a sharper sound, the longer ones have a smoother sound. You can do a search on this and see quite a few rematks about this.

Forget bi-wiring. There is little discerable difference. The cable ends should be bi-terminated (in an "F" pattern) for the ProAc's. You can do a search for this as well. There was a thread last week that discussed this.
