AV2 connections - order of performance ?
Posted by: Scirocco on 09 February 2009
Hi,
I just picked up a 2nd hand AV2 and V175 to hook up to a Denon DVD3930 and into my hifi systems for now and when space allows perhaps as stand alone. The DVD unit has connections for optical, coaxial and phono - question is which one to pick for the best quality ?
thanks !

The advice I had from my dealer was Coaxial. This is what I use between my DVD5 and AV2.

In the short time I could audition my DVD5 connected to my AV2, I could use a HiLine to the analogue input of the AV2 and found it audibly better than the AV2's own DAC via a good coaxial. This is also, incidentally, what I remember having seen as recommended by Adam Meredith.
I wouldn't know with a Denon, though.

Maxbertola,
If you only had an analogue connection between DVD5 and AV2 then I presume you didn't have a surround system. It would be impossible to decode the surround information from a DVD without a digital connection to the AV2. Co-axial is the preferred option.

Peter - I believe from memory of another post, maxbertola was referring to spinning a CD on the DVD5, hence analogue and the HiLine...
With regards to decoding and surround sound sans AV2, with the multi channel board fitted to the DVD5, it is indeed possible to output up to 7.1 channels via analogue DIN from the DVD5...
Steve.

Sorry I was inaccurate. I was referring of course to CD replay only, and to the two options, DVD5 converting and AV2 converting, just in stereo.
In this sense, I repeat I read a post by Adam Meredith suggesting DVD5 converting and analogue input for best CD replay.

An update for who's interested: after a few weeks, gear having warmed up continuously, I have incidentally sort of optimized power connections and now I'm not absolutely sure whether AN1 via HiLine or COA1 via Stereovox HV is the best connection between DVD5 and AV2 even for stereo CD replay. HiLine on analogue is a trifle clearer, but also less bodied, HV on coax is fuller but less refined. These differences, though, are very subtle, no order of magnitude is involved to my ears and the fact that I could have just one cable (I, like Adam Meredith, have a perverse aversion to choice) for all, tend to shape my opinions.
Do experiment!

I've Denon 3910 - video wise briliant but by £300 Pionier blue ray player beats it with a blu ray disk. However I'll watch DVD on the Denon, BlueRay on the Pioneer but it's only me who notices the difference (on a 1080p huge screen).
Audio when going through my Yamaha DSP E580 it won hands down (It does have good internal decoders compared to many amps),but no match to the AV2 where a coax connection was best.
I find my self out on a limb where I'll watch a DVD on the Dennon not on the blue ray as sound and picture is better (sound via digital) but only I seem to pick it up rather than the blu ray player (picture better but the sound, something just not right and I'd say better direct with do DAC conversion but not as good as a good DVD) But then again a £300 Blu ray VS a £1000 DVD ?
