Any problems with VanDenHul rebuilding an Arkiv (A) formerly rebuilt by Linn?

Posted by: Jaybar on 15 November 2001

I am not completely satisfied with my current cartridge (Benz L2) in my LP12/Ekos/Linto/Lingo, because the Tonal Balance is now a bit too warm and less involving, given my new SF signums. I have n old Arkiv A, which could be rebuilt,

Is there a limit to how many times you can rebuild the same cartridge and if not, how is the quality of the VandenHul rebuilds?

Thanks,

Jay

I don't believe there's any limit to the number of times the same cartridge can be rebuilt. Expert Stylus can do a full rebuild if necessary[coils, cantilever, diamond]. Linn, I believe does a full rebuild regardless of condition. ES replaced only the diamond on my Klyde and cleaned up the rest of the cartridge for $288 and it sounded better than new.

I use a Troika and Klyde that I rotate between as one wears out and have no plans to change that pattern for years to come.

"in the above thread, you did not mention whether a brand new klyde is better or not compared to an ES rebuilt klyde?
Linn claims that their rebuilt carts are as good as the original, don't they?" JChristophe

I've had a couple new Linn Troika's.
I've had a new Linn Klyde.
I've had a Linn rebuilt Klyde.
I've had the above Klyde after 2 years rebuilt by Expert Stylus.
I now use a Linn rebuilt Troika.

There's not that much difference between any of the above to get that excited about. The ES option to rebuild is less money and if you care for the cartridge properly can be retipped several times without a major rebuild.

Jay:

If possible, buy an Arkiv B. It is much better than the "A" and really worth it. The Arkiv B will work extremely well with your Ekos/Linto (I have the same).

I cannot comment on Van Den Hul rebuilds. However, I just traded in my old Arkiv A (it was worn out several years ago but I still had it stored away) for a Linn rebuilt Troika. My dealer/Linn did this at no cost to me!!!!! In fact Linn at first said that they might owe me money!!!!

Now I still need an Aro (for another LP12) to go with the Troika. Any one wishing to sell me their Aro or trade for a 102 let me know.

I'm not sure where I read it, but IIRC (Thanks, Dave), the VDH rebuilds turn the cartridges into VDHs.

So it's probably best to listen to some VDH carts before sending it to them for rebuild.

I'm very happy with a Linn-rebuilt Karma, but I don't know the Archiv/Troika/Klyde at all.
