World Music- recommendations

Posted by: Noopz on 30 July 2006

Hi guys

I thought it would be nice to hear what others interests in world music are.

My main interests are Arabic and African music. My two favourite artists in these genres are:

Arabic- Khaled
African- Ali Farka Toure

What world you music do you listen to? Mentioning album titles would be particularly useful.

Adrian: I just checked Richard Bona and my plastic is burning... Tiki will be released later this month according to Amazon.

Ron - I have had Tiki for a year I would think. It is available now on amazon.co.uk. I tend not use amazon.com as I find for some reason things take too long to get to Oz - last year I was getting delivery times of three weeks. Amazon.co.uk takes five days to Oz and hmv.co.jp arrives in three days. When you use amazon.co.uk, the VAT is deducted which pays for the postage almost.

I am having a bloody frustrating day putting a basketball net/stand together for the kids. Therre must be about 200 nuts/bolts/pieces and of course as always nothing quite fits properly. Cannot wait for it to get dark and a night of music.

Do try his albums Reverance and Munia The Tale as well. They are all very good.

Cheers
Adrian

Hi Gus,

You're kidding - I do exactly the same thing! Thankfully I speak Spanish so am able to ask some questions. It's not easy making your own selections when time is limited and there is so much to choose from. I'm off to Chile and Argentina next week and will be hitting the music stores in Santiago and Mendoza.

Illapu's greatest hits double CD is a good starting point if you like Chilean folklore.

Interestingly, this group was kicked out of Chile during the Pinochet regime but continued recording overseas and are now back in the country.

On a similar note, Inti-Illimani have recorded extensively and did a nice collaboration with Paco Peña and John Williams on Leyenda.

Best regards,
Ron

Hi Adrian,

Amazon do take a long time for sure. The trick is to keep a steady stream of orders going so they are arriving regularly Winker

One aspect I do like about Amazon is that they have a decent selection and rare or discontinued CDs can often be purchased from their Amazon Marketplace Sellers, who incidentally are far more efficient!

Good luck with the basketball hoop.

Best regards,
Ron

Ron,

Some good news for you. Savina Yannatou records on the ECM label and many of her cds are available from Amazon. The latest "Sumiglia" is superb. Here is part of the review of it from Amazon:

"Savina Yannatou shows great diversity and style in this beautiful album. Her sweet, ethereal, voice provides magnificent renditions of music from Greece, Italy, Armenia, Albania, the Ukraine, Moldavia, Bulgaria, Sicily, Corisica, and Palestine. Primavera en Salonica add interpretive music on the oud, accordion, darbuk, and many traditional instruments. Savina's voice and versatility are amazing. The band provides authentic and creative musical accompaniment making the sounds original but based on traditional sounds."

A quick Google search shows that Mode Plagal II and Mode Plagal III are available on-line from HMV, though they are expensive ay £16.99. You can here some snippets of some of their songs from their web site www.modeplagal.gr. Here is a review of their second album from Folk Roots magazine:

"Mode Plagal are an exciting Greek folk-jazz band. Their first album mixed free funk with traditional songs from Thrace and Macedonia (the original one, not the former Yugoslavian). But things are quiet different here. Mode Plagal quit far-out jazz improvisation in favor of the song format even when they do not use lyrics. Secondly they play 70's jazz funk in the style of Miles Davis and early Kool & The Gang, inspired by the joyful and communal spirit of Greek panygiria. "Funky Vergina" begins as a mixture of jazz-funk and Northern Greece folk, turns to Afrocuban and back to Greek folk. "Miles' Leventiko" mixes "So What" with the "Leventikos" dance from Epirus. They turn the "Kalamatianos" dance into a Charlie Parker bebop song. "Kalanta" starts with "Afro-Blue" played in a hi-life style. And just when you are ready to decide that King Sunny Ade was from Salonica, they explode in a jolly folk style ending in acapella. The album continues like this, with Theodoros Rellos using his sax as Greek klarino and all the musicians play for their right to pary. It's been a long time since I heard such a groovy Greek album that really defies categorisation. I cannot think of a better Greek act for Womad to consider and you can't find a better live band in Greece."

If you have found Mode Plagal on the HMV site, click on their label "Musurgia" and this will lead you to some more gems, including the 2000 compilation I mentioned in my original post, for just £11.99. If you are interested in modern Greek music, this is where I'd start.

As you say, this is a great thread!

Hi Cris,

Thank you for the tip. Savina Yannatou sounds great - she is great and is on order.

From Brazil and New York we have percussionist Dom Un Romao recorded on another nice label, Water Lily Acoustics.

As I am from Hungary let me offer a Hungarian example of some wonderful music.

Kalman Balogh
& The Gypsy Cimbalom Band from passion discs

It was recorded in 1997 in event house, however it is not a live recording. Very pure recording great mixture of Hungarian, gipsy, macedonian and some klezmer tunes. The track 8. A Csitari Hegyek Alatt, is absolutely wonderful, emotional song, with complex rhythm and inviting harmony.
