Musical Memories

Posted by: Alex S. on 30 January 2003

If I try I can chart my progress through life by certain musical moments. It started at school with what seemed like an innocent question: 'Do you Wanna be in My Gang?'. Gary's later activities have convinced me of the wisdom of not being.

At Manchester University a skinhead bloke was in a gang of one - The Conservatives - but he did play Sandinista incessantly, his one saving grace. My mates were more into the Gang of Four. I wasn't but I did manage to go out with Bill Rogers' daughter, a lovely girl who never spoke to me again when she caught me buying a Kit Kat. Give me a break!

Later, I ended up in France, largely on a diet of Mylene Farmer. Being on a diet of Mylene Farmer is like being on a diet of Jelly Tots - great for a while, then you're sick.

My next girl friend liked George Benson, but at least she had huge tits.

I met my wife in Russia. Dr Alban was really big. Somehow we managed to survive through this. Now I'm playing Sandinista again, One More Time in the Ghetto.

What are your musical memory moments?

Dr Alban???

I suppose, it's your life, take it or leave it.

The week of my 20th birthday...

Sat: Buzzcocks supported by Joy Division, brilliant concert
Sun: Quiet night in pub, Pedigree or the late unlamented Home bitter
Mon: Last night of teens, don't recollect anything about that night.
Tue: 20th birthday, ditto
Wed: The Undertones, the ultimate teenage band of the late 70's, and I was 20!

Three of the best bands around at the time (or ever!) in the same week!
