What is your single top upgrade?

Muchachos

leaving aside the obvious ( I bought Naim...), what is your single best buy? And why?

I would seriously consider the Akiva cartridge as mine. Fantastic grip of detail, much more bass and overall control, noise floor greatly reduced ( how?? ) and yet, more musical and involving. The acid test is that I have never listened to as much music as I do now.

Regards

Mike

Mike,

for me it was when adding a Hi-Cap to my 180.

Each upgrade was incremental, and it's impossible to id the best.

Here are the critical ones:

1) first Naim 62/140 from MF A1
2) LP12 from Thorens 165c
3) first hicap (on the 62)
4) ARO
5) 250

less important but significant: Cirkus, 72 in place of 62, 82 in place of 72, NACA5 in place of NACA4, Karma in place of Grado Platinum, CDS1 in place of Sony 77ES

most satisfying:
1) ARO
2) 250

These gave me the most enjoyment, but of course, the ARO ain't worth much without a 'table, and the 250 ain't worth much without a source and preamp.

Adding a Flat-cap to the cd 3.5
...
or was it Nait 3 to 102/140
...
or hi-capping the 102?
...
or Harbeths HL 7's?
...

Aaarrrrgh! How can I pick just one! I told my wife they were ALL absolutely necessary!

I suppose recent upgrades stick in the mind but two of my biggest vinyl ones have been recent:

Chucking out the Ittok and adding an Aro;

Chucking out the LP12 and adding a Well Temepered.

1. Modifying my equipment rack so that all shelves are twelve inches apart and then implementing some decent isolation between box and shelf.
2. Placing the equipment rack in a different room to the listening room.
3. NAP250.

Getting my Planar 3 (second hand) to replace a funky Dual 1229 (which I paid a fiver for - I still miss that idler-drive bass!)...

Putting RDC cones under the Planer 3 recently (much clearer, less surface noise and deeper bass)

Putting a Eupen power lead on my amp....

Finally - hopefully a massive improvement on my Rega Planet later today when I hack the lead off, stick an IEC socket on the end, and use my old RA YellO or some random (Sonic Link?) mains cable (bright yellow with MK toughplug) into said socket - £3.56 inc VAT - nice Smile

Upgrading my IBLs from Mk1 to Mk2.

Though plenty of purchases have had positive effects on the system, the biggest one recently has been moving back from a far-field (15' from speakers, speakers 10' apart) to a more near-field setup (8' from speakers, speakers 10' apart and slightly toed) which single-handedly cured some room issues I'd been struggling with, took an edge off the treble and introduced a tremendous sense of being part of the performance, rather than listening to the performance.

I'd recommend anyone try this - probably not everyone's cuppa tea, I admit, but it's the biggest single sonic change I can recall since Sanyo midi -> Linn Basik/Akito/K9. Now *that* was a heck of an upgrade!

"Less important but significant…CDS1 in place of Sony 77ES"

Does this mean the difference between these players was not huge??? Say, not as big as adding a hicap to the 62???

Apart from going from a Heybrook TT2 to an LP12 and NAD3020 to a NAIT 2, gewtting a Hi-Cap, definitely. It's been said many times on this firum before, but Nsaim's committment to seperate top quality power supplies is what differntiates them from other manufacturers. Getting a Hi-Cap really opened up the music for me. Worth every penny.

I didn't buy it, just tried it, and the best addition to my Naim system (52/135) was a NAP500.

Here's another cost effective one. Recently upgrading the tweeters on my Kabers to the latest spec Neodymium units. Cost just £110 fitted, awesome improvement.

The best upgrades were:

1. NAC52 from an 82 with Supercap (therefore would love to try a 552 in my active system...but it may be risky as ... I may love it but for the price!)

2. The Arkiv B (or II) or whatever it is called. I have had two Arkivs and the one I bought last year is just beutiful (so once again I must dem Linn's new Akiva.

3. Keeping all my kit turned on (apart from LP12 - but I keep the Lingo on). I usually only turn it off once or twice a year if we are away from home for a few days or more.

4. Dedicated mains supply with own consumer unit and dedicated earth rods in the garden. Really good but definatelty worth keeping earth rods wet when the ground is dry (my neighbours and friedns think I am crazy).

I upgraded all the power leads and cables from the Naim supplied to Kimber. Due to cost it took some time but the daftest upgrade was the oak cone feet. How do they work? Why do they work? But they do! lol
