LP/CD Storage - help needed
Posted by: long-time-dead on 02 November 2003
Scene - moving into brand new house in 6 weeks or so. SWMBO has ordered the new couches, carpets etc. Everything in it's place etc.
The spare bedroom upstairs will house my LP, CD and DVD collection but I must keep some in the living room for "normal" use - I see a new stair carpet eventually !!!
Since we have nothing arranged for this at yet, I was wondering if any members keep a similar arrangement (i.e. bulk of their software in another room) and how they have overcome it.
Pictures would be brilliant !!!!
Thanks in advance !

When I had my basement finished I had this record rack built into the wall. It's about 8 feet wide. This was suppose to be for my extra records that I seldom played. Shortly after the basement was completed I decided to move my main system to the basement so this is where my favorite records now reside.
The other less played records reside in two record racks that use to be in the same room as my main system upstairs.
The company that made the racks are no longer in business. The top and sides are made from solid oak, the shelves are veneered oak. The rack is 4 feet wide.

Strongly recommend Shelfstore for CDs, IKEA Bonde shelves for LPs.

This is my "temporary" CD / DVD store. It holds the ones that are in favor out of the large archive.
Easy to flip thru'and the pockets hold the CD in one side and the CD book in the other.

we use IKEA Ivar: it's a modular system made form plain pine with adjustable shelves and varying width/height combinations; not v attaractive but quite functional and v cheap.
On the shelves we have IKEA boxes designed to hold CDs/DVDs/Videos. All this is stored in the second bedroom of our flat (which is actually used as a study), allowing the living room to be kept clear of 'clutter'.
Better still, in my opinion, would be to have floor to celing cupboards filled with media.

I am having a pine bookshelf made up to order. 3Ft wide and 6Ft high. All shelves are 1" thick and it will hold 800 LP's.
Cost is £165 delivered.

Even though the records are in the same room as the Hi-Fi, I still keep a stack near the turntable of things I've purchased or have listened to lately. When the stack gets too high I re-file the majority back to where they go and start all over again. Looks like what you're looking for is a temporary place to keep your records and cd's as well. I remember Sound Organisation making a record rack the size of one of their turntable stands that would hold maybe 100 records.

Thanks to everyone concerned for their input so far.
I will keep the majority of my collection upstairs in another room but want to keep a small amount (mainly my most fav. CD/LPs) in the living room.
Normally, there is a small pile of each sitting against the wall either side of my rack but I can see that lasting about 2 milliseconds in a few weeks time ! SWMBO would flip !
I am tending to think along a small cabinet (with door) to hold some LP's and a nice little rack sitting on top for the CD's.
Now where's that IKEA catalogue for some inspiration ?
