Does the Naim NAPV 175 Have the power?
Posted by: HuwJ on 15 March 2009
This is my current system:
AV: Pioneer BDP-LX08 Bluray / Yamaha V4600 Amp / Focal Electra Front 1027Be / Centre 1000Be / Rear 1007Be / REL505 Sub.
Music: Naim CD5x & Hicap / Naim SuperNait & Hicap.
I want to upgrade to HD sound and am looking to get the new Rotel processor. I want to keep things Naim, where I can, and would like to use the 175 to power my centre & rears.
Will the 175, at 50w, have the power to complement my SuperNait?
Regards,
Huw

No, the Electra demands quite a bit more current to work well. The NAPV 175 seems to be a little light for that. A NAP 200 would be the minimum (which means in your case to or the NAP 200 and a NAPV 145.

I think the NAPV175 will have 'enough power' to drive the speakers because they're actually not that difficult to drive, but I don't think the result would be very good because the Electra series needs better quality in the first place. Even the Supernait seems a little light on that front.
I suggest the NAPV145 for the centre is a basic requirement. Don't forget that upwards of 65% of what you hear in a movie comes from the centre speaker.
Since the rears are needed for much more ancillary duties, you could get away with a NAP150x I guess, but the 200 is the natural match.

Thanks for the input guys.
I'm not sure how much difference replacing the SN with a pre/power would make. The HC2 did help a lot when I put it on the SN though. I think the Focals can handle better amplification but I'm happy with my Hi-Fi balance at the moment.
My goal is to get improvement on my AV and I too think 50w (even of Naim power) is likely to be a weak link. However a 145 & 200 would cost far more than I want to spend.
I guess I might get a Rotel power amp and waste the 2 amps that would normally drive the fronts.
Cheers

The only way to know would be to audition the NAPV 175.
Sometimes auditions go right against expectations ...
