One of the great joys of having a vast record collection is that you sometime stumble across something you haven't heard in years, listen to it and effectively "re-discover" it.
Happened to me yesterday. I pulled out Looking For St Tropez by Telex (on Sire, 1979. I'd forgotten how bloody good it was, and, in that hackneyed old phrase, how ahead of its time it was.
To wit: A fantastically mentholated cover of Rock Around The Clock (all slow languid beats and vocoders), the brilliant electro-pop of Moskow Diskowand Something To Say, weird vignettes like Le Café De La jungle (sole lyric: a heavily vocoder'ed "Dr Livingstone I presume?") or Some Day/Un Jour(sole lyric: "Some Day/My Prince Will Come".
Great tunes, great sound, etc. Can't think why I hadn't heard it for so long! (at least 10 years). So it seems that Belgium has made a contribution to the cultural well-being of humanity after all.
I enjoyed myself so much that I decided to do it again. So I closed my eyes and pulled out LPs at random. I could only listen to them if they hadn't been played in at least a decade.
I selected:
MC 900 FT JESUS: Hell With The Lid Off ( Nettwerk Europe 1990) Absolutely fan-fuckin' tastic! Best white rapper ever?
SEVERED HEADS: Rotund For Success (Nettwerk Europe again, this time 1989)
Wonderful - one for Mr D Slater perhaps?
CHARLES MINGUS: Mingus Dynasty(Columbia 1960?) I'd forgotten just how good Mingus can be!
(as a result I went back to Mingus Mingus Mingus and Mingus A-Hum.
NITZER EBB: That Total Age (Mute 1987) A bit dated, but Join In The Chant still has aa certain je ne sais quoi
I haven't had such a good time in ages. I think I will try this again soon, this time at the other end of the collection.
Anyone else had similar experiences/done something similar/care tto try something similar?
Kevin
