New Naim system in 2 weeks!
Posted by: Geoff J on 29 April 2003
Hi
It's taken ages to save up and I've wanted a Naim system for ages!!!!! ....but I've finally ordered a CD5, Nait 5, Flatcap 2 (extra SNAIC's to power CD5 and Nait 5), Intro 2's & a 5 metre pair of Naca 5 terminated.
It'll be a couple of weeks for the order to arrive and be installed by the dealer.
.............I can't wait : ))))))))
once it arrives, I guess it's going to be a few months before it's properly run in.
Is there anything I should be aware of seeing as this is my first Naim system? or shall I just sit back and wait patiently ; )

Geoff,
Congratulations on the purchase.
Just be patient and wait until your sistem is delivered and then wait until its properly run in.
Then just sit back and enjoy the music.
Regards

Go out and buy loads of new music before the credit card bill comes in.

Why not get loads of beer in & clean the place up a bit because you will find loads of new friends will want to come around and listen to you new system.

Don't forget to stop listening to music occasionally to do things like go to work and get some sleep.

It's funny you should mention sleep ...or in my case ....lack of : )
and yes I'm looking forward to showing off my system.
Hopefully it'll shut up all the people who keep telling me that I won't hear the difference between this and my old system or that it will sound just a little bit better for all that money.
Does anyone else get those comments?

Oh yeah!
All the time, even from myself sometimes
I can hear the difference (as can my girlfriend), but is it worth the money? A very much more difficult question that I hope to answer with a home dem in the end.
ps Very jealous of new sistem, I'm still saving!
Seth
Is Naim the only way forward?
Ahh, Ahh! I'm burning!!

Expect the following:
Friend: Sounds alright, so where's the tuner?
You: It just plays CDs.
Friend: So what are all those boxes for?
You: This is the CD, this is the power supply for the Cd and amp, here is the amplifier.
[looks like he thinks you have been done over] Friend: So how much that cost then?
You: £X.
[looks like he knows you have been done over] Friend: Bloody hell!
This conversation is much more wearing when you pre/power and even more power supplies, can't imagine what it is like when you have a six pack!

Ha Ha, yes I've already had that comment about the manual CD tray.
I don't think I'll even bother explaining it to some people ...they just don't get it !

...won't break
The kicker is if you don't have a rack and you stack the boxes - looks like a (nice) wide-body midi system!!!

Who Really Should Order a CD5 and FC2

I think you should keep your old system by the side so you can do A/B comparisons for a while. That way it will be obvious what Naim can do. You'll have a big grin on your face, and others will hear it clearly too.
Amazing how easily it becomes the norm and you start thinking about tweaks and upgrades. Enjoy it all.

Prepare yourself for completely banal discussions such as those already mentioned. In my experience they are the exeption rather than the rule.
My mate says my system sounds 'Tinny'
whilst regularly ridiculing my CD3/NAC72/NAP140/NACA5/KEFQ35 system. He also constantly says "listen to THIS!!!" when I'm at his house whilst turning up the volume on a computer CDROM through a 1970's SONY amp/speakers (which he has on the carpet at ankle level!!!).
The real difference is that there is no midband or treble detail AT ALL on his system and the bass just swamps the whole sound thudding throughout the room. You often can't even discern what instruments are playing (guitar? Piano? Cymbals Yes or No??). I'm happy where I am thank goodness.

Once made the grave mistake of telling my family how much I spent on a MC cartridge[Lyra Lydian for your info]after much brow beating[from them]Then ensued much ridicule.Quickly stopped when I said I could afford it and was thinking of spending more when it needed replacing.
Most people just like listening and are usually stunned into silence and wonderment[is that really a record,no go on, your're having me on].Just think how much musicians spend on their instruments.I think good HiFi is very good value for money when you think how it opens the doors to so much music.

I only gave my best friend the round figures and make jokes about the money spent. I dare not tell my conservative parents tho they did stop by once and did see it sitting in the corner. Most people are surprised it's not a Japanese make, but what do they know. I beleive the best stuff is British. I like the less is more philosophy.
One friend doing his own recording just bought a new expensive microphone and was amazed at how much different, and better, it was. Good gear is expensive dagnabit.

When friends or family (most often the in-laws) query me as to the cost of a new purchase, I usually respond by asking them how much money they'll be contributing.
When they say they'll not be coughing up anything, I explain that they'd be perfectly entitled to know the final price if they were helping, otherwise, MYOB. Causes a few ruffled feathers, and requires a few applications, but eventually it eradicates all such questions.
I honestly do try to say it all in a reasonable and calm fashion, and with a straight face ------
