Hearing the new DAC at the Munich Hifi-Days
Posted by: themrock on 25 May 2009
Hi,
i am wondering that i have not read anything about the Naim-DAC presented at the Munich Hifi-Days.
Was nowbody there?
The only thing i read, was on a german Hifi-Forum.
There the guy told, that he had heard the HDX with and without the ext. Dac and it was a huge huge difference with the new DAC.

Had a discussion with my local dealer who joined Munich ...he told me that DAC still is a prototype - so no music for now... But there will be different levels of the Ndac- entry to HE, maybe a DAC/streamer combi- that would be great!

It was on display only but at the front of the room and for anybody's eyes. It has no sign, no writing at the back, so only the curious will have noticed it.

As far as I remember there was a USB port on the front and at least coaxial and BNC digital inputs along with toslink inputs on the back. And an BURNDY input for a power supply which is an upgrade and not needed to run the DAC as far as I know.

USB port on the front? So it must be some kind of player as well.... Bummer. Otherwise why would there be a USB on the front if not for sticks. Was hoping for a DAC only.
No USB in the back?

as far as i know , the first launch will not be the pure dac. it was mentioned a dac with a pre or a dac/streamer .
i really wonder , when naim will announce some details.
paul s. mentioned in another thread very soon.
was the dac device on the show still in a 5 case ?

IIRC, one USB at the front and one at the back, 4 optical, 2 BNC and 2 coax.
A Burndy socket of course.
A 5 series casing.
Din and RCA output sockets and 2 switches: my guess is one to select the output and the other one to lift the ground, but only my guess...

My guess is that the front USB is a convenient connect for laptops etc. Thanks Manu.quote:Originally posted by pcstockton:

No AES/EBU?
usb for what use? streamer or not? pre?
This is so confusing,
It would be nice if Paul give us more details...

That would match the statement a dealer gave to me... He've seen a PLAY button on the front... sounds like a streamer/ dac combi!

Could be to control an iPod that's plugged into the front? Maybe?

Looking at the pics, i doubt there is any usb/firewire direct connect to a pc/mac to allow it act as fully integrated sound card, which would be a pity.

Totally agree, if after all the DAC is mainly designed for upgrading HDX, some CDP and for connecting ipods it would be a big dissapointment,

If there is a series of DACs then presumably it would be another upgrade for the HDX or anyone using a DAC.
None of us really knows what Naims game plan is at this point. Many scenarios are up for consideration:
1. To those of you who are using the Lavry or any other DAC, does it really matter what level this DAC falls into as long as you perceive it to be better than the Lavry, how much, and then do your own cost/benefit analysis. Obviously if there are better DACs in the line-up we're all in the same boat HDX, other DAC etc...
2. Now that the DAC (s) are out, does Naim develop a transporter as discussed elsewhere which can be upgraded with different DACs?
3. Are the CDP's going to be re-worked, upgraded, and have Digital out to hook up to a DAC or do they also add a USB,ethernet in so you can play your CDP and the hook up your USB NAS to the CDP, use it's music player and then go out to the DAC-- this essentially is what we will be doing with the HDX with external NAS if you add the DAC.
4. Obviously not having the entire line-up out at once makes making decisionstough or do you bite and then trade in and upgrade later on.
Exciting times depending on how the product lines develop. If the above comes to fruition then we as consumers have a much better choice of miixng and matching to fit your needs.

Hi,
This is so confusing and we only have a few pics to guess how the new DAC will be, I will stick to the Lavry until I see a real reference Naim DAC for my computer. I still think the forthcoming DAC might offer great performance, based on fact it is supposed to be an HDX upgrade.
