Power Consumption

Posted by: Bluetorric on 25 June 2008

Hello,
I was wondering in these days of power conservation, how many watts does a Supernait consume in standy mode?

My lad going to Glasto today, take the car? take the train/ bus? So he takes the second option, result bus breaks down 5 minutes out of Victoria coach station. I still don't know if he's there yet!

Howard

I hope he makes it OK.

Of course, when he gets there I hope he'll insist they turn off all the amplifiers; everybody could just have a sing song.

Seriously, I hope he enjoys the festival.

I'm really lost as to what the issue is here. Yes I could turn everything off and live in a sealed darkened room, but I don't think that is a fate that anybody should have to endure.

Hi ROTF

Assuming we all accept the underlying premise (that there is a growing energy crisis) I think the main issue is: how much pleasure should we sacrifice now in order to protect the well being (or even survival) of others in future?

Unfortunately, as Martin Fry of ABC once sang, "I don't know the answer to that question"!

George, I agree with a lot of what you say on this thread but isn't there also something to ROTF's point about enjoying life while we can? A matter of balance maybe.

Dear Nigel,

I don't mind what people do! I do find it a bit difficult to take the logic of the justification sometimes though. It has seemed to me for a long time that the Naim advice to leave the kit powered up all day, every day was increasingly ludicrous. I used to leave it on, and did so for about the first five years. Then I tried turning it of, and guess what! Well yes you guessed that I found it made no really significant difference in terms of enjoying the music. My method is simple. When I get in I listen to PM and the Six o'Clock News, and may start listening to music after that, or listen through to the Archers. That can be more than two hours after turn on. Certainly I have never noted a poor or harsh perfomance on any music if preceded by a period of speech radio. Often Radio Three is the source of live music making in the evening, and recordings often come out at the weekend, or late on ...

I suppose it is seems no more sensible to me to leave Hifi on when I am not there to use it than leaving a light bulb burning in an empty room, and the result is much the same in terms of wasted electricity. I simply do not buy the argument that Naim does not work well for days after being turned off. In fact if I did I would not use the pieces, because I would never find decent function in them.

I quite agree about having a bit of fun as you go along - a bit of balance, and I guess you will understand that I do have a bit of fun from time to time, one way or the other. Indeed, for me quite a proportion of this is actually from music listening, so it really would be cutting my nose off to spite my own face if the Naim set I have really did work perfectly with a brief warming up period before evening listening!

I don't ask anyone to follow my method, but I do hope I have made people think about waste. I have one friend who has a 552 style set, who turns off! I am sure that there is some small effect, but not one that is all that significant, or ruinous in replay!

I hope that the future brings Naim pieces that are designed so that the company can put a note in their manuals to the effect that Naim recomends a ten minute warming up period before perfect full function is achieved. Now that would be progress!

ATB from George

PS: Dear Rotf, I am going to catch the train on Friday, early [day already booked off work] and return on Saturday or Sunday. Kings Lynn <-> London Liverpool Street, and then Paddington <-> Worcster. I love the train actually! Either that or abandon going over! ATB, G

Dear George

Have a good journey.

ATB Rotf

PS I would prefer it if Naim were able to design amplifiers so they didn't make a thumping noise through the speakers when turned on and you could switch it off after each listening session.

Just out of interest is there an 'approved' sequence for switching on your kit? Does one start at the source and work 'downstream' or vice-versa? Just curious, I've been switching mine on and off a lot just lately due to my power problems at home. That loudspeaker pop makes me cringe each time.

Switch off back to front (eg. power amp to source), switch on front to back.

M

p.s. anyone who even owns a Naim hi-fi rather than sitting round the campfire making music on home-made instruments is already off the scale for consumption, regardless of whether they turn it off at night.

Hi George

I agree that there's been some pretty shaky logic on this thread!

There is a warm up period with my kit, but it's roughly an hour or so - certainly not days. I'm guilty of leaving it on all the time, but I will try to mend my ways - certainly can't justify leaving it on overnight.

I read the Polish Vodka thread, so I know you like to have fun!

Hi, Rotf

Surely this is irrelevant if like me you leave your system on at all times unless of coaurse lightning strikes. Smile

Hi Steve

That's my reasoning - when I go out and the system is left on and there is a storm I always fear the worst. So far I've been lucky.

Hi Folks,

Like 'George' I admit I hate the concept of waste but also love music.

Having had a 252/SCap with 300 on the end of a CDX2&XPS2 and randomly powered it down or left it on (depending if I remembered to turn it off) I must admit that I have noticed no obvious difference in sound quality between leaving it on or turning it off. Now I make a special point of powering off after each session.

Regarding the power-off 'thump' I have never worried that it might cause damage to my speakers - it's far, far quieter than the levels achievable whilst listening to loud program material. I agree it would be nice if the thump didn't occur, but it isn't a problem.

Maybe just try turning off your kit after listening sessions for a month - say, during July, just to see whether it truly ruins your life? At least if you decide to leave it on, you do so from a standpoint of having heard the dire results of switching off for yourself?

Just my 2c - some of you may think that's all they are worth!! Smile
