Guardian - 1000 Al***s

Posted by: droodzilla on 17 November 2007

A nice idea - produce alist of 1000 albums that avoids the usual suspects - but do you like the results?

1000 Albums (A-C)

Me, I'm pleased by the inclusion of Virginia Astley's "From Gardens Where We Feel Secure", an early example of bucolic ambience, and by the Carpenters' "Singles" compilation, because Karen is one of the greats.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the list, and hope to discover a few obscure gems as a result.

I must have been living in a box somewhere because I only have 12 of the albums listed and there are quite a number of artists I have not heard of. It will be interesting to see what's included in the rest of the alphabet.

I will have a good read through the reviews and see if there are any artists that come across as worth a punt.

No Beach Boys? Pet Sounds wasn't the only fabulous album they made.

The Beach Boys Today album is featured Tom

Indeed. Both reside on my CD shelves.

Well - a list is a list - and it's the Guardian, so they will have odd views, but some of the inclusions are very good Folk Roots New Roots is there and they had the good sense to include Vashti's Lookaftering and there's good albums by Anne Briggs, Kevin Ayers, Kevin Coyne, The Creation and so on .........

However, no mention of Amon Duul II, Atomic Rooster or most stupefyingly, Basia Bulat. Would anybody else in the sane universe rather listen to All Saints than Blur - no John Coltraine either.

Well it is all just opinion and I think that Steve McLaren's England deserve the chance to play in the European Championships, but it's all just opinion.

In our house of 4 residents the score is:-
A - 8
B - 11
C - 6

I agree England deserve to play in EC I've always wished it wasn't Steve McLaren's England.

My scores:

A - 8
B - 10
C - 5

I'm relaxed about the inclusion of All Saints, as I welcome the attempt to challenge the perceived hierarchy between "serious" rock music and "frivolous" pop music. A lot of the stuff we now regard as classic was seen as throwaway pop in it's day, The Carpenters being a good example.

The reason I liked this list (so far!) is that they obviously went for the less obvious - eg BB Today not Pet Sounds, Beatles Rubber Soul, not Revolver, Pepper etc. There are some of my real faves there, like John Cale's Paris 1919 and Carthy /Swarb's Byker Hill, B52s, etc. Picking Vashti Bunyan's new CD rather than the old one is also inspired, if only because it's actually better!

Prediction - the Nick Drake album will be Pink Moon. My Pink Floyd album would be Atom Heart Mother (their's will be either Piper or Saucerful).

FWIW and, if I've counted right, my score is

A - 3
B - 12
C - 9

just noticed nothing by The Animals or perhaps they're under 'T' - in fact most of my albums are by groups starting with T - The Kinks, The Who, The Pink Floyd etc.

I respect them because they have Stations Of The Crass.

Spooky, since <confessional mode> my name is Nigel too.

And, our systems are nearly identical.

Are you... me?!

A-2
B-7
C-2

Like most other contributors here I have other albums by some of these artists. Somewhere we have to make compromises in what we buy,it is natural to go for diffinitive albums by some artists and buy up everything by artists that really grip us...isn't it?

Probably not!! Nigel is the world's worst name and I can see why you'd want to keep it quiet.

Of the Grauniad albums, I currently have

A 5
B 14
C 15

plus there must be another 10 or so that I have owned in the past.

Are we viewing the same list? I can't find it.

Mine has

Shirley Collins & Davy Graham
Folk Roots, New Routes
(1964)
One of the great fusion experiments of the 60s, matching British and US folk songs against settings that ranged from blues and jazz to North African styles. The exquisite vocals were provided by Shirley Collins, and her songs transformed by the inventive guitar of Davy Graham.

Comets on Fire
Field Recordings from the Sun
(2002)
Let it be known that there are very loud guitars here, and you can pretty much divine the rest from the title. Santa Cruz's psychedelic juggernauts upped the ante for cosmic-rock cacophony, taking the soul-and-fire thud of primitivist riffers such as Blue Cheer and making it faster, heavier and freer. A wild, refracted joy.

D = 7
E = 0
F = 4
G = 6
H = 3

Not impressed by this list at all - no ELP or ELO, no proper (Peter Green) Fleetwood Mac (sorry but I detest the album Rumours) and who else could think Grateful Dead's American Beauty was better than Anthem of the Sun: Phil Lesh certainly doesn't - probably the same person who put Unhalfbricking ahead of Liege and Leif. I know it's opinion, but ..... Earth, Wind & Fire .. give me strength.

And of course, to confirm these list makers are clueless, there is an obvious entry missing from H - any guesses?

Only goes to show that Newspaper reviews of music are pretty worthless (like most other stuff in newspapers) - making up your own mind is the only way.
