Guardian - 1000 Al***s
Posted by: droodzilla on 17 November 2007
A nice idea - produce alist of 1000 albums that avoids the usual suspects - but do you like the results?
1000 Albums (A-C)
Me, I'm pleased by the inclusion of Virginia Astley's "From Gardens Where We Feel Secure", an early example of bucolic ambience, and by the Carpenters' "Singles" compilation, because Karen is one of the greats.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the list, and hope to discover a few obscure gems as a result.

Seems that there are too many compilations in there (e.g. they picked the one Hammill album that ISN'T in my collection!) so they cop out a bit.
They also seem to have gone for the more commercially successful releases (e.g. The Cocteaus' "Heaven or Las Vegas" rather than "Head Over Heels")
They did, however, get it very, very correct with The Chameleons!
My scores to date...
A - 2
B - 4
C - 5
D - 2
E - 2
F - 4
G - 3
H - 2

Probably because both were truly appalling and should not feature in any self-respecting collection.

from the owner of non-self-respecting collection
I can't help it - I've only got 7 ELP albums and 2 DVDs and only a few ELO albums (all right. most of 'em and just about everything the Move and the Idle Race ever did).
I have no All Saints, EW&F, Police or Coldplay though - so some redeeming features (or perhaps not).
Here's a nice clip.
Even John Lydon admires the great Keith Emerson OBE.

You are truly taking bollox.
Mind you I wouldn't have listened to KE if I'd heard that John Lydon had admired him.

Are we viewing the same list? I can't find it.
Mine has
Shirley Collins & Davy Graham
Folk Roots, New Routes (1964)
One of the great fusion experiments of the 60s, matching British and US folk songs against settings that ranged from blues and jazz to North African styles. The exquisite vocals were provided by Shirley Collins, and her songs transformed by the inventive guitar of Davy Graham.
Comets on Fire
Field Recordings from the Sun (2002)
Let it be known that there are very loud guitars here, and you can pretty much divine the rest from the title. Santa Cruz's psychedelic juggernauts upped the ante for cosmic-rock cacophony, taking the soul-and-fire thud of primitivist riffers such as Blue Cheer and making it faster, heavier and freer. A wild, refracted joy.

Love Supreme takes up the bottom half of page 14.................. maybe different if your looking online

Shoulda been "Before Hollywood" though!
I think it's a good list, in that it's thought-provoking - as it was intended to be. Lists that repeat the so-called canon (Sgt Peppers, Pet Sounds, etc) bore me.
Gripes? The tratment of jazz is half-hearted, or half-arsed. It's a vast area that deserves a list of its own.
I was going to complain that they include Jeff Buckley but not his dad. Then I noticed that the double live album "Dream Letter" is included after all - a great recommendation that no Tim Buckley fan should be without.

That too is acceptable!
I saw them live a few times round about the time of Spring Hill Fair. Lost track of them after that, but was (of course) very saddened by Grant Mclennan's recent and untimely death.

H pt 2 = 0 (strange choice of Hollies album)
I = 1 (I think - I've never heard of 10,000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion, but if it is twice as good as 5,000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion then I'm keen to hear it).

K = 3 (strange choice of Kraftwerk album)

M = 8
Diccus62 - is it me again, but I can't find Manfred Mann or Monochrome Set and where is Melanie. As you say, they did have The Move - but still can't accept a top 1000 with no ELP or ELO (I mean Eldorado has got to be better than Lieutenant Pigeon's Mouldy Old Music - even though I like the latter and Hilda's wonderful keyboards).
Oh well, provocative opinion as they say.

There's some rubbish in that Guardian list - I feel quite relieved I have so few of the albums they recommend. One album I have and they list is the Dead Kennedy's Rotting Fruit on vinyl ... anybody want it, it's complete rubbish and I'm sure I'll never play it again.

Think it was a pretty eclectic 1000. As it says it's not a 'best of' but its good to see more World Music (which i have very little of) in there though it was heavy on the Cuban influence. Seemed to be a lot of jazz again which i'm really light on. A heck of a lot of albums that I wish i'd bought at the time such as N*E*R*D*, Pop Group, Public enemy, Ramones first album (tho i have others) and particularly Wallace & Grommit sing the hits of Nirvana (UK).
Thought they were trying too hard with all the 'Joneses'
Lots of stuff to try, lots of stuff to avoid like the plague.

I've just totalled up, and I have 125 of the albums, including some I'd forgotten I've got! An interesting list.
Great to see that the O Brother Where Art Thou OST is in the list.

As I started the thread, I thought I'd post my final totals. I have 98 of the 1000 albums listed, with probably as many "near misses".
Under "T" I was delighted to see "Seven Songs" by 23 Skidoo - an ear-boggling post-punk classic. If you're a fan of that era and don't already own this, get over to Amazon now!

I already have it. I used to have the 23 Skidoo on vinyl but sold it. Perhaps I shall get it again. One album that appeared in the list is Young Marble Giants, which I always meant to buy at the time. That has now been remedied....

Only have about 20 of these albums with the same again of near misses and a few that I used to have or have on a cassette copy somewhere.
The ones I do have are either main stream cheesy things I'm almost ashamed to admit to owning to obscure stuff I never listen too.
Most bizzare things that I have that are actually on the list are:
A-Ha Hunting high and low (OK classic pop, but amazed it's on the list)
Kruder and Dorfmeister the K&D sessions - (bought on recomendation from Amazon but apart from the odd track never listen to).
Why was there no Yello for Y?

It was a slightly eccentric list in my view. For Led Zeppelin they chose Physical Graffiti. Surely they had to pick one one of the first four albums.
The Guardian is still very grudging about progressive rock. They found a spot for Genesis (Selling England - good choice, but why describe it as a guilty pleasure??), but nothing for Yes! (Fragile or Close to the Edge would have been worthy picks.)
