Guardian - 1000 Al***s

A nice idea - produce alist of 1000 albums that avoids the usual suspects - but do you like the results?
1000 Albums (A-C)Me, I'm pleased by the inclusion of Virginia Astley's "From Gardens Where We Feel Secure", an early example of bucolic ambience, and by the Carpenters' "Singles" compilation, because Karen is one of the greats.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the list, and hope to discover a few obscure gems as a result.

For me it's not about how many I have, it's about which ones look interesting. I have built a shopping list.
Yazoo - Upstairs at Eric's
Wailing Souls - Firehouse Rock
Stax - 50th Anniversary Celebration
Ze Records - Mutant Disco
Ian Dury and the Blockheads - New Boots and Panties
The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Greg Osby - Invisible Hand
Oliver Nelson - The Blues And The Abstract Truth
James - Seven
Lee Hazlewood - Love and Other Crimes
Stan Getz - Jazz Samba
Chic - Risque
Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Rattlesnakes

That's absolutely true of course. If you don't have it, I would recommend 'The Return of the Durutti Column'. Reading the list made me dig out my copy yesterday, and I'd forgotten how good it is. I was playing Lloyd Cole's Rattlesnakes a couple of days ago - his first and best in my view.

Swell Maps are in, which is always a good sign. I'd file Sun Ra under 'S' though.

In my view it's all very well including boring shit pop like the Spice Girls to be inversely culturally inclusive, but to miss out real musicians with great talent like Jan Akkerman of Focus is just plain ignorant, and yes there is a lot more to them than Hocus Pocus and Sylvia. They were hugely influencial and were the most accomplished group in fusing classical modes and rock.
Also the jazz section is an attempt to be knowledgeable but in their ignorance miss out one of the most important avant garde drummer/composers of the 1980's - Ronald Shannon Jackson, who created a unique soundworld, and played with the likes of Ornette Colman, Charles Mingus, Albert Ayler, Bill Frisell, Bill Laswell, Vernon Reid.
In their attempt to be clever they've included lots of rubbish.
And just to nuke the Guardian list even further - they continually cop out by choosing "best of" complilations, which further undermines their credibility, and which don't count as album releases, they were made for purely commercial reasons.

One man's rubbish is another man's recycling project
One man's Sh*t is another man's compost.
Or indeed a woman's
......... and still they haven't reprinted it with Microdisney included.
